Cartoonish brawler Brawlout bursts on to Xbox One and PS4

-

For fans of Nintendo it is that time again when Super Smash Bros. is at the forefront of the mind: characters are being announced and everybody is hotly anticipating release date. But if you fancy some brawling of a similar style before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releases, on Xbox One and PS4 no less, then Brawlout is most definitely what you should look towards.

You may be familiar with it, as Brawlout has been an Xbox Game Preview title for a good few years now, but now it is releasing as a full game.

Playing out in bold, colourful, cartoonish visuals (that are Xbox One X Enhanced, might I add), Brawlout takes the animal kingdom up a notch, as you watch animals from all across the world fight to the death in fast-paced fighting where reactions, skill and dexterity are key to coming out on top. Each character on the Brawlout roster caters for a different playstyle, such as ranged or more of a brutish style, and then the opportunity for further customisation to your preferred fighter opens up. Each character has 3 distinct Variants which switch up stats, outfits and even the moves you can pull off, broadening the roster from the main chunk of characters.

The main objective of Brawlout, just like the aforementioned Super Smash Bros., is to knock your opponents flying out of the stage, and the more damage they have taken indicates how far they will be knocked back when hit again. Defensive manoeuvres such as air dodging will come in handy when trying to avoid a finishing blow, whilst the Rage moves add new offensive options. As you deal and receive damage your Rage Meter will start to fill up, slowly allowing for a Rage Burst attack to break an opponent’s combo and throw them back to create breathing space. Fill it up fully, however, and then Rage Mode can be used. This both increases your damage you deal and reduces the damage you take – a costly albeit game-changing ability.

As you would expect from a brawler you can compete in up to 4 player couch or online stock, timed or team battles, or you can take on some AI opponents if you want to fill out a match. Advanced Tutorials are also present should you want to nail down those all important combos, and Arcade Towers will offer a challenging solo experience.

If you are planning a get together and want a quick fighter to boot up, or want to get really stuck in to the nitty-gritty of a brawler, then Brawlout will cater for both. On Xbox One you can now pick up the Standard Edition for £15.99, or for some added skins, emotes and gear the £23.99 Deluxe Edition is the way to go. Additionally, the game will also be available on PS4 from today.

Game Description:

Brawlout packs a punch with couch and online play modes, blending platform fighter mechanics and traditional fighting game play into a stylish and fluid battle royale. Rather than slow-paced defensive battles, Brawlout goes all-out with the lightning-fast aerobatics which platform fighters are famous for. Striking the balance between the growing competitive scene and the genre’s party game roots, Brawlout hopes to cater to the veteran platform fighter, the casual fan and the newcomer looking to make their mark. Each character in Brawlout has their own unique playstyle, catering to specific character archetypes seen in other fighters. Whether you’re a die-hard grappler or a rushdown fiend, there is a fighter for you in Brawlout. There are currently six original characters and two popular indie characters to choose from that allow for varied play styles. Hyper Light Drifter is set to unsheathe his light sword while the legendary luchador, Juan, brings his full moveset from Guacamelee. As well as cosmetic skins, each original Brawlout character has three Variants; alt versions of the character with different stats, outfits and even new moves. With these Variants, Brawlout’s cast numbers 19 individual fighters. Find the fighter and Variant that’s right for you and tear it up on the battlefield. Combined with familiar movement techniques like wavedashing and airdodging, Brawlout adds some extra mechanics seen in other fighting games. The Rage Meter builds up as you both deal and take damage, allowing you either break combos with the Rage Burst or unleash hell with the Rage Mode. The Rage Burst pushes opponents back, breaking their combos and allowing players to create some breathing room at the cost of half their Rage Meter. If the meter fills, you can activate the Rage Mode, increasing the knockback you deal while reducing the amount you take. As for modes, Brawlout has all you’d expect from a normal platform fighter and then some. Up to four players can compete in either timed, stock or team battles. AI opponents are also available if you want to practice your team combos with a friend, or if you need to fill out a free for all. Train with Advanced Tutorials or go in for yourself in challenging Arcade Towers. If you’ve got friends to ruin or friendships to say goodbye to, Brawlout comes to Xbox One with lots of fun party modes!
