FIFA 18 gets its first official trailer and release details – is it pre-order worthy already?

-

Today, EA unveiled their first official trailer for the next instalment of their yearly football series, FIFA 18. The hype was strong for this one, but I’m never one to fall for hype and so now it’s live, did the trailer itself cause enough of a stir to send my excitement levels into overdrive? Should you be locking in those pre-orders immediately?

Well, that all depends on what you were expecting to find out because, as is the case with teaser trailers, not an awful lot of information can be extracted from it. What’s definitely noticeable is the focus on Cristiano Ronaldo and clearly he’s the superstar to drive EA forward as the global cover star of FIFA 18. Using game engine footage, they have an in-game model of Ronaldo gliding past Chelsea players before getting chopped down to set up a trademark free kick opportunity. The stand out part comes in the form of the visuals as Ronaldo looks an absolutely stunning likeness, with sweat dripping and all – calm down ladies and gentlemen, you can watch it for yourself shortly!

Whilst that’s basically all that can be taken from watching the trailer, EA have announced some accompanying details regarding the pre-order options available for Xbox, PlayStation and PC gamers. Some of us are easily swayed into pre-order super duper special editions, and there are a couple of options to consider.

The bog standard edition will get you £10+ worth of FIFA Ultimate Team Jumbo Premium Gold packs, a loan in FUT of Cristiano which allows usage of him for five matches, and eight special edition FUT kits designed by artists on the soundtrack. And considering that’s the regular edition of FIFA 18, those are some nice bonuses. Then there’s the Ronaldo Edition, which grants three whole days of early access and £45+ worth of the FUT packs – one a week for 20 weeks.

Those with cash to splash can go for the ICON Edition, bringing all of the above – with £79.99 worth of packs this time instead – plus Team of the Week loan player packs and Ronaldo on loan in FUT. No, I’m not talking about the cover star, but the legendary Brazilian Ronaldo Nazario, who also happened to play for Real Madrid.

It’s rather apparent that they are targeting fans of the most lucrative area of the game, Ultimate Team, to get those purchases in for FIFA 18 which launches on 29th September for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Switch and Xbox 360. As a part time FUT player, there’s nothing overly exciting here for me, but to the players who love FUT, these special editions and pre-order bonuses are a superb way to kick-start the ascension of your Ultimate Team.

Apart from the pleasure of seeing the visually brilliant likeness of Cristiano Ronaldo, we’re left chomping at the bit for any crumbs of information about the actual game. I guess we’ll have to wait until 10th June for EA Play and watch the fine specimen of a man on loop for now…
