When the kings of FMV announce a new game, you just know you have to sit up and listen. And that is what is happening today as Wales Interactive announce that their next FMV sci-fi thriller – The Complex – will be coming to Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Coming from the publishers behind Late Shift, with writing talent having previously delivered The Handmaid’s Tale, The Complex is the next FMV sci-fi thriller that Wales Interactive will be dealing with, working in collaboration with Red & Black Films and Little Jade Productions to release it on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC and Mac in Q1 2020.

The Complex is set after a major bio-weapon attack on London, where two scientists find themselves in a locked-down laboratory with time, and air, running out. With over 100 interactive choices, you will attempt to escape the lab with several different endings that are discovered based on your decisions and your relationships with other characters.

Created by a female-driven production team – written by Lynn Renee Maxcy, part of the Emmy award-winning writing team from The Handmaid’s Tale – the interactive movie stars Michelle Mylett (Letterkenny, Bad Blood), Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones, The Witch) and Al Weaver (Grantchester). Further to that, additional actors also include Twitch streamer and Xbox UK presenter, Leah Viathan.

Features include:

  • One story, several different endings.
  • A completely live action, cinematic interactive sci-fi thriller, filmed in full HD across England, UK
  • Over 100 interactive choices in total with no pauses or looping footage which leads to one of several different endings.

David Banner MBE of Wales Interactive says “Over the last few years in the video games industry we’ve been one of the driving forces behind the resurgence of the interactive movie genre and this exciting cross industry collaborative project will further blur the lines between film and games”.

Richard Pring of Wales Interactive adds “The Complex will be the first interactive movie that utilises our innovative new scripting tool for filmmakers and writers, which was developed in-house by Wales Interactive. We’re extremely pleased to be offering this tool to our partners and will be making a full announcement to reveal the software to the public in the near future.

John Giwa-Amu from Red & Black Films says “Making an interactive film has been a dream since I first read the Choose your Own Adventure books as a child. The Complex presents a rare opportunity to help pioneer new ways of telling stories on screen.”

Jade Alexander of Little Jade Productions adds “We are excited to be bringing a cinematic experience to the games industry with THE COMPLEX, which is a female driven genre project. We hope that this will inspire future collaborations”.

We’ll be sure to bring you further details surrounding The Complex in the weeks and months ahead.
