Trüberbrook is the charming German adventure game from Headup Games, that delivers a world full of style and thrilling story. Bringing together the likes of Twin Peaks and X-Files, Trüberbrook promises to appeal to both fans of the genre, and everyone else who just likes to see a fresh artistic experience.

This is a game that was crowdfunded via Kickstarter, reaching its goal within only 30 hours, amassing over $200,000 in total. – for that reason alone, high hopes are expected.

One of Trüberbrook’s most distinctive features is found within the unique visual style. The sceneries are purely handmade – ‘handmade’ as in: ‘Manufactured using real hands!’ And fingers. And glue. If you take a look at what the developers have made, piece by piece, by the sweat of their own brows, you’ll discover that every little detail is custom-made.

In order for things to become a gaming reality, the models were digitized using photogrammetry and later simplified for real-time rendering. Every scene got an individual treatment and was staged with actual physical lighting. This has allowed the development team to simulate different hours of the day or weather conditions. Even a change of seasons was possible just by redecorating the sets.

Every variation of the miniature models was photographed and then re-projected onto the digital model. Using various compositing workflows, the characters have been integrated into the scenery with digital lighting and real-time shadows. This way, highly detailed low poly models developed that blend perfectly with the digital characters. Each level was finalized by adding effects like light reflections, particle effects and depth of field.

Features of the game include:

  • Suspense! Mystery! Thrills! After all, it’s a single player sci-fi mystery adventure game. We want to keep you entertained!
  • Join American student Tannhauser, stranger in a strange land
  • Set in cold-war rural Germany in the late 1960s
  • Inspired by Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Stranger Things & Star Trek
  • Indulge in universal themes such as love, friendship, loyalty, self-discovery and dinosaurs
  • Handmade miniature scenery!
  • Full voice acting in both English and German!
  • Atmospheric, moody soundtrack

There has obviously been a whole ton of work dropping in to Trüberbrook and so if you’d like to check it all out for yourself then you should be ensuring you visit your favoured digital store come those release dates up top. In the meantime, we urge you to check out the trailer below. It may be an oldie, but it’ll give you a good idea of what to expect when Trüberbrook lands on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
