Ōkami is a very weird game indeed – amassing many re-releases on various platforms across Playstation and Nintendo consoles ever since its release on the PS2 in 2006, where it received critical acclaim. But it has never come to our beloved Xbox – until now.
The literal meaning of Ōkami offers some explaining to the actual game. Meaning “wolf”, among other things, it won’t come to your surprise that the beautifully sumi-e inspired cell shaded visuals stars a wolf – or should I say the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu in the form of a white wolf.
Based around elements of classical Japanese history, you, playing as this mystical white wolf, will have to defeat an evil eight-headed monster known as Orochi who is responsible for ruining the world of Nippon. The way you will go about this is, no, not with guns (you don’t have opposable thumbs, remember), but with other weapons, fighting techniques and brush strokes to dispose of any enemy between you and your main goal, combining weapons along with Amaterasu’s other attacks also.
But the most unique feature included in Ōkami is the use of the Celestial Brush to solve puzzles and proceed on your journey. A bridge is broken and you need to fix it? A quick couple of strokes from the brush will see it fixed in no time. Alternatively, the Celestial Brush can be used to cut through enemies.
The Ōkami HD version you will find on Xbox One will give you the option of playing out the game in original 4:3 ratio or a modern widescreen format – and it also has the added benefit of being a 4K Ultra HD and Xbox One X Enhanced compatible title.
Xbox One owners can now pick up Ōkami HD on the Microsoft Store for £15.99, while PS4 and PC gamers can do the same. We’ll have a full review for you soon.
