There is no doubt that everyone’s favourite blue mammal hasn’t really enjoyed his recent outings, with the third dimension not ever doing justice to the iconic Sega mascot. But never fear, because if you wanted a good old fashioned 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game to dash through then SEGA and the Sonic team have got you covered with Sonic Mania.
Including ‘remixed’ versions of classic Sonic levels such as Green Hill Zone as well as newly created levels to run through, Sonic Mania will appeal to anyone who either enjoyed his first outings or have never had the opportunity to experience ‘proper’ Sonic action.
Not only will you be able to play through each level as the lightning fast, dashing Sonic, but his good buddies Tails and the obstacle smashing Knuckles are coming along for the ride, each coming with their respective flying/swimming and wall climbing/gliding abilities, as they battle against Dr Eggman’s Hard-Boiled Heavies to reach an unusual signal that is showing a mysterious energy far away.
Sonic Mania will cater for multiplayer gamers too, with both the Competition and Co-op modes allowing you to play against or alongside a local friend. And of course the iconic soundtrack from Sonic’s past will be present as well, courtesy of Tee Lopes, adding to the overwhelming nostalgia that Sonic Mania will undoubtedly bring.
From today, gamers world-wide can get their hands on Sonic Mania on Xbox One, Playstation and Nintendo Switch for £15.99. A PC release will occur later in the month, whilst our full review is incoming.
