The Top 5 Games We Wish Were Backward Compatible on Xbox One

When a new generation of games come along, replacing the old, it’s hard to let go. You want that one last play of that great game, or maybe that last match with friends before the servers get shut down. Well, Microsoft might not be able to revive old game servers, but they can certainly give publishers the option to revive their games. With the Xbox One giving things a good crack via the Backward Compatible scheme, I can’t help but feel there are some games still missing.

Like this lot – the top 5 games we wish were available as Backwards Compatible titles on Xbox One…

5. Whiplash

I know what you’re thinking: what is this game and why should I care? Well, it’s a title from the original Xbox, but it would be amazing to have support for backwards compatibility, even if it didn’t have any graphical boosts or increased features.

Whiplash was simple: you play as a weasel and rabbit chained together and having got out of your cage, must escape the mall you’re in before the corporation that was carrying out testing on you can get you back. With witty humour that made for some great moments, if we’re after a nice metroid-vania game, this is a must. It was developed by Square Enix, and would certainly need some elbow grease to get it supported, but it would be well worth it for such a wondrous game.

4. Dead Rising 1&2

Wouldn’t it be grand if we could go back to the malls and casinos, causing some havoc for good ole’ times sake? Well, it would be great if we could go back and do it at a constant framerate of 30, and that’s why Dead Rising should come back from the dead and be backwards compatible.

The third game is already present, and the fourth is on the way, so why not have the whole series supported and allow fans the ability to relish in silly slaughter once more? Some may argue that there isn’t much of a point if they’re different characters, but the story wasn’t the main part of playing Dead Rising. The main reason was getting the best weapons and cutting a large line straight down the middle of the zombies in the cafeteria as you try to get some food to heal yourself.

Add in a little Off the Records and that spin-off mission, and you would have the best Zombie slaughtering game available, seconded only by Dying Light and Dead Island.

3. Red Faction: Guerrilla

Oh THQ how I loved thy games! Red Faction: Guerrilla was no exception, and certainly should be backwards compatible.

Imagine a game where the story is supported wholly by the games main mechanic: blowing everything around you to smithereens, just like you’re Yosemite Sam! Well, if you imagined the game on Mars and with proper structural damage, then you’ve dreamt of Red Faction: Guerrilla!

The game is mostly about getting scrap and destroying bigger buildings with the new tools that you obtain by completing the story, and you can only unlock new story missions by blowing things up. Guerrilla is repetitive, but in the way that makes your stomach jump for joy as that final support beam comes crashing to the floor.

Seriously, why hasn’t this game been made compatible, or remastered?

2. Burnout Paradise

This is the last Burnout game. Don’t trust your search engine when it tells you about Burnout Crash!, that game is nothing but bad news!

Paradise takes you to an open sandbox world with cars as you become the best racer in Paradise City. Sounds very familiar huh? Some would say that this is the Most Wanted game for Backwards Compatibility, and I would say that they were right as it was announced for Backwards Compatibility… last year.

Criterion seem to be working on the support for this game, but nothing has been announced or even talked about since their initial announcement. For such a perfect game like this, surely there is no contender, right? Wrong.

1. Burnout Revenge

I never said it wasn’t another Burnout game that needed it.

Revenge wasn’t like Paradise; it was mission based with a port to Xbox 360 a year after its release on the original Xbox. This is one of the epitomes of good racing games – with fast cars and an amazing soundtrack – one game where you can’t go wrong. Which is an absolute wonder why Criteron have said there is no plan to bring the game to Xbox One. I say they should make a plan!

The game was wonderful, with events that ranged from lapped races, all the way to causing the most damage to an intersection with one measly car. This was Final Destination without the build-up, and it was wonderful at making a race feel close, even if you were smoking the competition. It needs to come back, whether it be in compatibility, remastered, or reincarnation forms as a new title from Criterion.
