Regardless of whether the hype died down for We Happy Few a tad prematurely, Gearbox Publishing’s latest indie darling is finally making the switch from Game Preview form, to today release as a fully fledged survival title.
For anyone not too clued up on what We Happy Few entails, players will be thrown into a sadistic interpretation of 1964 England where a drug known as Joy is ravaging the area. Everyone is unnaturally high and strangely happy on this drug, becoming hostile to all who refuse to take their own dose of Joy. That includes the three characters that you assume control of during the story.
However as with many survival titles of late, dying in We Happy Few really is dying, and upon any restart you will be placed in a newly generated area, left to learn from your mistakes and made to kick on with the task at hand. Managing your vital signs as well as mastering combat and stealth skills to conform with the citizens of Wellington Wells will all be par for the course.
We Happy Few has certainly been an intriguing proposition ever since it was unveiled a good few years ago, but now it has finally broken out of Preview should be attracting the attention of both hardcore survival fans and anyone wanting to enjoy a visually attractive and extremely unique experience. It is available on Xbox One, PC or PS4, and you can find the game on the former via the Xbox Store right now for £44.74. £69.99 meanwhile will see you able to get hold of the Digital Deluxe edition which brings the base game plus the Season Pass – something which is also available as a standalone £19.99 and promises three future DLC additions.

We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial in the city of Wellington Wells. In this alternative 1960s England, conformity is key. You’ll have to fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants, most of whom don’t take kindly to people who won’t abide by their not-so-normal rules. Discover the retrofuturistic city’s dark history as you play through the intertwined narratives of three quietly rebellious citizens of Wellington Wells. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses as they face their pasts, prepare for the future, and engage in activities that aren’t exactly status quo in the artificially enthused society. Save 15% when you pre-order We Happy Few, plus receive the exclusive in-game Jolly Brolly weapon at launch. There’s a definite chance of pain when using this weaponized umbrella, complete with advanced blocking capabilities and trippy psychedelic interior.
