1 in, 6 out – Game Pass builds it up, before knocking things down

We’re well used to finding new games popping up on Game Pass from time to time, but that does mean certain titles are occasionally shifted out to make space. That’s the case today and just as Game Pass players can welcome in 1 new game, others start to fall down around them with a cool 6 being removed from the service.

Should you be a Game Pass subscriber, on Xbox or on PC, then you’ll know how things work here. We’re slapbang in the middle of February and that usually signals the start of a few games moving out of the service, all in order to make way for further games down the line. February 2023 itself has been pretty decent for additions, with Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord the most recent drop. We’re expecting further games to hit in the week or so ahead too, like Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition on the 16th and the much hyped Atomic Heart on the 21st.

Today though we find Cities: Skylines – Remastered hitting home. The Remastered version of an old city builder, Cities: Skylines gets the Xbox Series X|S treatment, dropping into Game Pass as it goes.

We’ve already detailed what the Remastered version of, what we think is the best city builder on Xbox, will contain, but be known that with the Series X|S update you’ll find an altogether smoother experience. Towns and cities will be much more easily built with a more freeflowing structure, whilst additional tiles and features come to the fore too. Expect to see a visual shine, along with a whole host of new DLC – we’ve checked the Xbox Store page and there are no less than 30 new DLC packs available for purchase to go alongside Cities: Skylines – Remastered.

Edit: The DLC packs in place, whilst new for those coming in fresh to the Remastered version of Cities: Skylines, should be seen as older drops for the game, now optimised for Xbox Series X|S and PS5.

If you’re up for a bit of building, we’d guess that the new version will be the one you want to get. If you’re Xbox Series X|S’d up and have a Game Pass sub to hand, this is a no-brainer. Find it from the Xbox Store today and keep an eye out for our upcoming review.

But as Game Pass gives, it takes and today sees 6 titles drop out of the service. Will they ever be back? Probably, but for now if you want to play any of those listed below, you’ll need to fork out some cash.

  • Besiege (Game Preview) (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • CrossfireX (Cloud and Console)
  • Infernax (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Recompile (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Skul: The Hero Slayer (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • The Last Kids on Earth (Cloud, Console, and PC)

We’re not sure any of these will be massively missed (although CrossfireX players may feel different), but should you be looking for something to keep the kids quiet through the half-term off-school period, it may be worth a little look at The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom. We gave it a 3.5/5 in review and said “The Last Kids on Earth and The Staff of Doom does enough to warrant interest from those who enjoy the universe via other mediums. The gameplay is straightforward and the arsenal of moves will be exciting from a child’s point-of-view, while the boss encounters are a real highlight.”

Skul: The Hero Slayer is another you may want to continue playing – if only to ensure our 4.5/5 review is one of warrant. Having first released in October 2021, we loved the skull-swapping game mechanic and gorgeous graphics, stating: “Skul: The Hero Slayer is a very good example of a roguelite done right, and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who has the slightest interest in this genre – and even those who don’t.“. Just prepare yourself for some RNG fun.

So, 1 in, 6 out – it may not be the best of days to be a Game Pass subscriber, but we can’t always be treated to gifts. Let us know what you think in the comments – will you be building with Cities: Skylines – Remastered once more, or are you going to sit and cry in the corner over the removal of one of your favs?

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
