10 Xbox One Indie games we can’t wait to play in 2018!

-

It has to be said that the big-budget triple-A games are often the most anticipated of the many Xbox adventures to arrive throughout the year, but there are often a number of classic titles that arrive courtesy of the many talented indie developers out there. With many of 2017’s biggest titles coming from the independent developers, we’ve been looking into the exciting games expected to arrive in 2018.

Another year of new releases is something to look forward to and here are 10 of the most anticipated Xbox One indie games set to arrive in 2018.

Tropico 6

City building games have always carried a large fan base and with the huge success in recent years of titles such as Cities: Skylines and Aven Colony, have pushed the genre to the peak of popularity once more. It’s fair to say excitement for new titles in the genre are at an all-time high.

One series that’s always done city building well is of course the Tropico series, and with Tropico 6 due to arrive later this year, the return of El Presidente and his trustworthy advisor Penultimo is one we can’t wait to get in on. Recent entries have failed to bring much of a change to the series, but Tropico 6 is still a highly anticipated title, and with the right additions there is no reason why it can’t be one of the most exciting games of 2018.

MOTHERGUNSHIP

Bullet-hell shooters are a well-known breed amongst fans of the shooter genre, but when you hear the term bullet-hell, it’s usually in relation to the latest top down roguelike permadeath adventure that’s arrived to give everyone a pasting.

MOTHERGUNSHIP – yes capitals are necessary – is one of the few titles however to mix the bullet-hell way of life and the modern-day FPS genre into one hybrid adventure.

A few years back we saw the mostly one-man studio Terrible Posture Games bring us Tower of Guns, a classic FPS bullet-hell shooter. MOTHERGUNSHIP is the follow up adventure that puts players in charge of very big and customisable guns against hordes and hordes of bullet heavy robotic alien invaders. After the joy brought by Tower of Guns, MOTHERGUNSHIP is certainly one shooter we can’t wait to get our hands on.

Wreckfest

Racing fans are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking their next adrenaline fuelled track day, and with games such as Gravel and The Crew 2 already on our radars, 2018 doesn’t look to be lacking on new additions to the genre. But whilst there is plenty of variety, those hardened old school gamers out there will certainly remember a time in which a different type of racer was the dominant choice, one that ruled long before the Forzas of today.

Wreckfest looks to revive that long forgotten breed when the Demolition Derby inspired title arrives on Xbox One later this year, bringing with it some incredibly lifelike physics as well as a new lease of life for one of the most beloved racing sub-genres ever.

We can’t wait to get on the track to participate in some destruction!

Agony

Whilst Madmind Studio may well be an indie development team, the talent they have on their books is one of the many reasons why upcoming horror game Agony is high up there on our highly anticipated list. Their team of staff have worked on titles like The Witcher 3, The Division, Alien Rage and many others, so there is a lot of top quality experience behind the making of this rather gruesome and disturbing looking horror adventure.

In Agony, players will begin their journey as a tormented soul deep down within the depths of hell – with no memories of their past. By using a unique ability that allows you to control the many souls and mindless demons stuck in the underworld, you will need to make your way through the dark depths of the hellish environment by interacting with the depleted souls residing within, before taking on the mystical Red Goddess in order to have a hope in hell of escaping an eternity amongst the flames.

Sounds good doesn’t it? Let’s get ready to go to hell!

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Back in 2015, Ori and the Blind Forest lit up the hearts of many Xbox gamers with its heartfelt story that saw them take on the role of Ori on a path to save the dying forest of Nibel. With Ori and the Blind Forest proving such a hit, it was expected that we’d be diving back into the universe once more at some point, and after the announcement of Ori and the Will of the Wisps at E3 2017, it was confirmed we’d be heading back in come 2018.

There isn’t too much that’s known about the upcoming sequel at present, however we do know players will be given the chance to explore new lands as depicted by the trailer. With such grace and beauty found in the original, there are high hopes for Ori and the Will of the Wisps and seeing as the original proved to be one of the best platformers in recent years, this is one of the most anticipated releases for the whole year.

Strange Brigade

For those that have played any of the acclaimed titles from the guys at Rebellion Developments such as the highly popular Sniper Elite, or the incredibly successful mod-turned-spinoff Zombie Army Trilogy, it’s easy to pass off Rebellion Developments as a full-blown triple-A developer. But that’s not the case, and this year we’ll be able to go hands on with their next release, Strange Brigade.

Strange Brigade looks to bring players into another fine co-operative adventure, but this time whilst there are still clear signs of the Sniper Elite/ZAT style gameplay lurking in there – at least if the basic trailer and our previous hands-on is anything to go by – Strange Brigade looks to hold enough of its own unique differences to warrant our interest.

Rebellion’s latest title will see players take on the role of the unflinching servants of The Crown, the Strange Brigade. As this fearless squad, you will embark on an exotic safari into danger, fighting armies of mythological Egyptian menaces, and uncovering many hidden tombs, caves and riches that the lands have to offer.

This looks set to be the Indiana Jones-esque adventure we’ve all been craving, and very soon we’ll be able to enjoy it.

Remothered: Tormented Fathers

Survival horror has taken on a bit of a new identity in recent years, but Remothered: Tormented Fathers – the first game of an expected trilogy – looks to bring back some of the classic horror etiquette that we all know and love when it arrives on Xbox One and PS4 later this year.

In Remothered: Tormented Fathers, players take on the role of 35-year-old Rosemary Reed, who arrives at the house of the elderly Richard Felton looking to investigate the disappearance of a girl called Celeste. After an awkward run-in with the nurse/carer of Richard Felton, Rosemary begins searching for answers – but once Richard finally figures out her true intentions though, things take a deadly turn for the worst.

Remothered looks to bring a rich story full of unpredictable plot twists, a psychologically moving experience and a meticulously designed third person horror tale that is sure to bring a thrill to even the most diehard horror fans. The game is already gathering a slow but sure cult following on the PC thanks to an early access scheme, and this is definitely one we can’t wait to tackle.

Bring on the horror.

Jurassic World Evolution

I’ll be honest here, when the theme song kicked in and the trailer showcased the unique park building vibe of Jurassic World Evolution, my excitement grew to all time high.

As someone who played a vast amount of Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis on the original Xbox all those years ago, I for one am amongst the many who have been clamouring for another park building simulation style experience within the Jurassic Park universe.

Whilst the announcement trailer may have only been a short-lived experience, the idea of building our very own Jurassic Park has long been something many of us have considered ourselves fit for, and with the trailer showcasing a game that will finally allow us to create one of the most exciting parks in entertainment history, this is one game we cannot wait to get our hands on with – even if it’s just to correct those poorly designed enclosures we’ve seen throughout the film series… I mean come on guys, who puts a Raptor/Giganotosaurus hybrid in such a small enclosure?

Oddworld: Soulstorm

The younger gamers amongst you may not remember the odd and infuriating, yet highly enjoyable, antics of Abe’s adventures through Rupture Farms and the Necrum Mines, but the Oddworld adventures are still to this day some of the most beloved platform experiences available.

With the recent Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee remake – Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty – proving such a hit, Lorne Lanning and co at Oddworld Inhabitants are now hard at work on a reimagining of the second title in the series, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.

Oddworld: Soulstorm will bring players a newly written story, whilst retaining much of the great magic that made the originals such a huge success back in the late 1990s. Whilst little has been revealed about the new game, the developers have been keen to keep fans involved with plenty of quizzes and information mining exercises in previous months.

The upcoming Soulstorm adventure is expected at some point in 2018.

State of Decay 2

It may have the backing of Microsoft Studios behind it, however the upcoming open-world zombie survival adventure is sure to be one of the most anticipated indie adventures of the year.

Created by Undead Labs, State of Decay 2 will bring fans an expanded experience over the original, with co-op play and an even larger map to roam and survive in set to feature. Players will be left to fend for themselves in an unforgiving world, whilst trying to retain control over their band of survivors and the base in which they stay.

At present there isn’t too much information to go on in regards to the highly anticipated sequel, however with State of Decay proving an exclusive title – at least in terms of the console variety – this is one game that is sure to have all eyes on its release.

Many may already claim that the Zombie genre is over-saturated, so it will be interesting to see what type of adventure Undead Labs bring to keep the survival genre relevant. As a huge fan of zombies in any shape or form, I am one of the many who enjoyed the first outing with State of Decay through Trumbull Valley, and with the sequel said to bring a wealth of improvements over its predecessor, there is no reason to expect anything other than an incredible experience when it arrives later in 2018.

So, there we have it, 10 Xbox One indie games that we can’t wait to play in 2018. Do you agree with our choices? Is there another game that deserves a place on this list? Let us know in the comments below or via our usual social channels.
