We know the Xbox Games With Gold scheme isn’t as tasty as it once was, with most effort and focus now firmly planted at the boots of Xbox Game Pass, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore the free offerings that come about each and every month. As we hit the midway point of July 2021, it’s that Games With Gold scheme which is happily switching up the free love once more, allowing Xbox gamers the chance to download 2 more Xbox games for free.
July 2021 has so far seen Conker: Live & Reloaded and the rather brilliant Planet Alpha both be stripped of their price tags, with Xbox gamers with valid Xbox Live Gold subscriptions able to download both games for free. Whilst Planet Alpha is staying free though, Conker is about to go back up in price, but that does mean that 2 additional games will be stripped of theirs.
Those games are Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break, and the Xbox 360 classic collection of Midway Arcade Origins.
Rock of Ages 3: Make & Break first released on Xbox One this time last year, yet 12 months on it’s now being given away for nothing. A quirky little affair, Make & Break never really lived up the hype that was found with previous Rock of Ages titles, and whilst our full review of the game talked of a fun and humorous story, along with some great Rock of Ages gameplay, a multitude of glitches, a clunky level editor and uninspiring levels brought everything down a peg or two.
But that’s not to say you shouldn’t be playing it and now that the Xbox Games With Gold scheme is providing it for free until the middle of August, you’d be crazy to not take in a download and give it a little roll.
Kicking in as another free title is that of Midway Arcade Origins. This first released years ago on Xbox 360, but will be playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S thanks to the magic of Backwards Compatibility. And if you’re looking for a collection of classics, Midway have got your back.Â
Usually priced at £14.99, this will give you access to more than 30 titles from the golden age of the arcade – games like Lair of the Vultures and Spy Hunter II for instance. With local cooperative play, those sweet Xbox achievements and Gamerscore and full leaderboard support, we’re pretty sure that the Midway Arcade Origins will be able to sort you out with some fun gaming options.
Of course, these free games only come about if you are the proud holder of an Xbox Live Gold subscription, and you’ll only have until the end of the month to download Midway (and a little longer for Rock of Ages). We’d advise hitting up the Xbox Store right now, flashing that card at the door and taking home your freebies before you forget. It’s not like you even have to play them right now either – just save em up for a rainy day!

Actually, Midway Arcade Origins is not free. Despite appearing in my games with gold section, it still bears a price on the Microsoft Store. Can someone look into that please as I’d very much like to download it.
