Age of Mythology Retold Heavenly Spear

A new pantheon of gods, heroes, and mythical yokai rises today as Heavenly Spear, the first major expansion for Age of Mythology: Retold, descends upon the battlefield.

This substantial new chapter introduces the long-awaited Japanese pantheon to the acclaimed real-time strategy game, complete with a sweeping new campaign, unique units, and devastating god powers.

Available today on Xbox Series X|S and PC, this divine intervention from World’s Edge and Forgotten Empires is ready to reshape the eternal conflict between mortals and myths.

Wield the Power of a New Pantheon

Priced at ÂŁ14.99, the Heavenly Spear expansion is a deep dive into the rich world of Japanese legend, offering a wealth of new content for players to master.

At the heart of the expansion is a new, hand-crafted 12-mission campaign that follows the journey of Yasuko, a peaceful farmer’s daughter. Her destiny is irrevocably changed when she discovers a magical spear, drawing her into a world of gods and monsters.

Guided by Akari, the spear’s guardian, Yasuko must prevent the ruthless warlord Kagemasa from imprisoning the sun goddess Amaterasu and claiming godhood for himself.

Gods, Heroes, and Yokai

  • A Pantheon Like No Other: Command the might of 12 new Japanese gods, including the thunderous Raijin, the wind god Fujin, and the ocean dragon Watatsumi, each offering unique god powers and strategic possibilities.
  • Spirits, Swords, and Shadows: Field a host of new units drawn from Japanese folklore, each with inventive gameplay mechanics:
    • Kitsune: Cunning fox spirits that serve as excellent scouts.
    • Shinigami: A terrifying spirit whose shout scares away enemies and who respawns in a more powerful form upon defeat.
    • Tengu: Winged master swordsmen who leap into the heart of battle.
    • Samurai: Skilled human soldiers who grow stronger with every victory.
    • Shinobi: Expert assassins and saboteurs perfect for covert operations.

The expansion is rounded out with six new multiplayer and skirmish maps, all inspired by the sacred mountains, misty forests, and mythic landscapes of Japanese legend, offering fresh tactical challenges for online and solo play.

How to Answer the Call

There are several ways to add the Japanese pantheon to your game:

  • Standalone Purchase: The Age of Mythology: Retold – Heavenly Spear expansion is available for ÂŁ14.99.
  • Premium Edition: For new players, the Premium Edition includes the base game and the Heavenly Spear expansion.
  • Premium Upgrade Edition: Existing owners of the base game can grab the Premium Upgrade Edition to get the new expansion and other premium content.

Another Reason to Lose Track of Time

Age of Mythology: Retold has already proven that a classic strategy game can be just as engrossing today as it was two decades ago. In our 4.5/5 scored review, we were completely captivated, stating:

The number of times I’ve looked up from a particularly involving battle and discovered that it is midnight is beyond a joke! Age of Mythology: Retold is great fun to play, complete with a real “just five more minutes” vibe… The big news is that it is just as good today as it always was, requiring some play immediately.”

The addition of an entirely new and deeply thematic pantheon like the Japanese, complete with a fully-fledged story campaign and a host of unique units, is the perfect reason to utter those famous last words, “just five more minutes,” all over again.

The heavens have opened, and a new legend is ready to be written. Whether you’re a veteran of the original looking to command a new pantheon or a newcomer ready to be enthralled by a world of gods and monsters, the Heavenly Spear expansion is an unmissable new chapter.
