Slavic mythology and our furry feline friends aren’t the first duo that springs to mind when you are wanting a new Metroidvania title to play through, but developers RedBlack Spade and publishers Ratalaika Games are keen to blend these two together seamlessly in Catmaze.

Releasing today on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, following on from the PC release in 2018, Catmaze sees you follow the journey of young Alesta as she attempts to revive her late mother from the world of the dead. Now, this is no easy task, and as such Alesta has recruited the ethereal Yavi and Navi, cats linked between the world of the living and that of the dead.

Throw in a total of twelve creatures for Alesta to attract to her party, and you have a crack team of fighters to poison, freeze and take down a range of enemies that Alesta faces.

It will be spooky ghosts, poisonous mushrooms and truly terrifying bosses that will be encountered as you make your way across this Slavic Metroidvania world: as you progress through the story, you’ll gather new upgrades and abilities in order to expand the accessible landscape further, in true Metroidvania style.

A full list of gameplay features in Catmaze includes:

  • Use Spells
  • New Enhancements for Killing
  • High Replay Ability
  • Inventive Map to assist
  • Hidden Rooms
  • Save Feature
  • Side Quests
  • Platforming and action feast
