There are few games that fans have asked Ubisoft to revisit as loudly as Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
More than a dozen years after Edward Kenway first hoisted the sails of the Jackdaw, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced finally arrives, rebuilding one of the franchise’s most beloved adventures for modern hardware while adding fresh content to tempt even returning captains.
Launching today on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, the reimagined pirate epic is available in a £49.99 Standard Edition, while a £59.99 Deluxe Edition – also included with Ubisoft+ – bundles in exclusive cosmetic packs for both Edward and the Jackdaw.
Back in April, we covered the announcement of Black Flag Resynced, but now it’s finally time to see whether this long-awaited return to the Caribbean can live up to the enormous expectations surrounding it.

Still One Of Assassin’s Creed’s Finest Adventures
Ask Assassin’s Creed fans to name their favourite entry and Black Flag almost always sails into the conversation.
In fact, when we looked back at the series in our Looking Back To Black Flag – Assassin’s Creed At Its Peak retrospective, we argued that Edward Kenway’s swashbuckling adventure represented the franchise firing on all cylinders. It blended satisfying stealth with exhilarating naval combat, memorable characters and a world that simply begged to be explored.
Resynced doesn’t change that foundation. Instead, it looks to modernise it.
Edward still carves a path across the Caribbean alongside pirate legends including Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, but now the experience has been rebuilt with smoother movement, more responsive combat and expanded naval mechanics designed to make every broadside feel that little bit more impactful.
More Than Just A Visual Upgrade
While sharper visuals are an obvious part of the package, Black Flag Resynced goes further than a simple graphical overhaul.
Built using Ubisoft’s latest Anvil Engine, the Caribbean benefits from ray tracing, Dolby Atmos support and a more seamless open world, while stealth, parkour and swordplay have all been refined to better match modern Assassin’s Creed expectations.
Naval combat also receives meaningful attention, introducing alternate fire modes alongside improvements to upgrading the Jackdaw, ensuring that ship-to-ship battles remain every bit as thrilling as they were back in 2013.
Just as importantly, Ubisoft says a host of quality-of-life improvements have been implemented throughout, smoothing off many of the rough edges that naturally come with revisiting an older game.
New Stories Await Returning Pirates
Veterans won’t simply be replaying the same campaign.
Black Flag Resynced expands Edward’s journey with additional story content centred around fan-favourite pirates including Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, while three new officers join the Jackdaw’s crew as part of the main narrative.
Elsewhere, players can expect extra sea shanties, collectible pets, a photo mode and other surprises that help distinguish this version from the original release.
Those opting for the Deluxe Edition will also receive the Master Assassin Character Pack and Master Assassin Naval Pack, adding exclusive cosmetics for both Edward and his legendary ship.
