After a test? You should be purchasing the Trials Rising Gold Edition on Xbox One right now

-

I missed out on playing Trials Rising upon first release. And I’ll admit, I was a little gutted.

After taking in all the Trials titles to have previously released on Xbox – Trials HD, Trials Evolution, and Trials Fusion – time constraints, family matters, and the fact that there were a million over titles to check out meant I skipped the Rising beat upon initial launch. And besides, I was still pretty much nursing a huge hangover from attempting to nail everything humanly possible from Fusion and Evolution. Those harder tracks will always be my downfall.

But then came two downloadable content options for Rising, in the form of Route Sixty-Six and Crash & Sunburn, and with the stupidly low price being asked of the Trials Rising Gold Edition (a mere £14.99), with the base game and those packs included, the trigger was pulled and I was once more back in the game. That game being one full of jumps, stunts, the biggest crashes the Trials world had ever seen, and a ton of strangely enjoyable frustration – the latter being something that the Trials experience has played on for many a year.

Trials Rising as a standard experience is pretty damn decent, with the base game providing much more of the usual Trials flair that we’ve come to expect from the series, and whilst visually it’s hard to say there’s been much improvement over Fusion, it’s still hugely detailed with brilliant backgrounds accompanying your stunt-filled racing. With the University breaking down the skills you’ll need in order to be successful, a deep career to enjoy, and plenty of sponsors to keep happy, there’s plenty of game available in the base Trials Rising experience alone. And that’s without even speaking of the consistent pleasure found in the multiplayer scene, or the chance to customise things beyond your wildest dreams with a whole slew of available rider and bike customisation options in place.

For all of the good of the base game, and for all the joy that it brings, the addition of Route Sixty-Six, taking us off to the good old United States of America is one that makes the entire experience one of real pleasure. Running with a full United States theme, the customisation opportunities that you can utilise for your character are nothing short of immense, and that’s without mention of the new tracks and challenges that it brings. For just £6.39, should you have fallen in love with what the standard Trials Rising offering brings, then this really is a bit of a no-brainer.

Crash & Sunburn meanwhile builds even more on what was delivered via Route Sixty-Six, throwing in a couple of new bikes, a rather fetching Jungle Explorer vest to kit yourself out with, a variety of new leagues to compete in, and nearly 40 new tracks which will see you having to test your skills in more ways than one. And yes, again, whilst the simpler tracks are perfect for getting you accustomed to what is required with Crash & Sunburn, those trickier tests will be something that will keep you busy for some time yet – there’s nothing better than running the Trials circle of attempt, crash, reset, and repeat.

The combination of massive Trials Rising base game, and all the tracks and skill games that brings, along with the brilliance of Route 66 and the crazy courses of Crash & Sunburn have meant that my joy for Trials has returned; in pretty mammoth fashion if truth be told. I’ve been so taken in by this Trials world once more that I can’t recommend a purchase of the Gold Edition enough, particularly if you can grab it at an even more discounted price. Hell, even if you know that the trickiest of tracks are well beyond your paygrade, you’ll still find plenty enough available in the Trials Rising Gold Edition to keep you busy during the long winter nights. Even if busy does usually equate to crashes galore. And even if the fun that it brings occasionally spills over into frustration territory. But hey, that’s what Trials is all about. Is it not?
