There is a slightly unusual new Age of Empires release available through the Xbox Store. It has the name, the familiar historical heroes and the promise of building a civilisation from the ground up – but Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition is different.
See, this is a free-to-play PC-only version of Age of Empires Mobile, rebuilt around mouse-and-keyboard controls, a desktop-friendly interface and the quicker pace of its mobile counterpart. It is available to download now on PC through the Xbox Store, alongside Steam.

Not A New Mainline Age Of Empires
The name is important here. Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition is the PC version of the existing mobile game, rather than a new entry built in the mould of Age of Empires II, Age of Empires IV or Age of Mythology: Retold.
That means it brings its own take on empire management. Matches are designed to move quickly, economies and technology trees accelerate at a faster rate, and large-scale battles are built around shorter decision-making windows than traditional PC strategy fans may be used to.
The aim is not to replace the classic Age of Empires formula. It is to give the mobile game a proper home on desktop, with the controls and presentation expected from a PC release.
Built For Mouse, Keyboard And 4K
The original mobile version was designed for touchscreens. This edition obviously moves away from that entirely, offering full mouse control, keyboard navigation and a refined interface designed around playing at a desk.
There are also enhanced 4K visuals and improved settings options. it includes achievements, social features, dedicated ranked ladders and alliance tools for players looking to take the competitive side more seriously.
Fast Battles And Familiar Faces
Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition brings a broad roster of civilisations, real-time weather, dynamic destruction and more than 72 heroes. That includes familiar historical figures such as Joan of Arc, Leonidas and Julius Caesar, alongside characters including Hua Mulan, Miyamoto Musashi and Rani Durgavati.
There is ranked PvP, co-op play, alliance ladders and seasonal resets, with global servers keeping events, chat and alliances active across both PC and mobile.
Crossplay and cross-progression are central to the release too. Use the same account and you can pick up where you left off between PC and mobile, whether that means checking in on an alliance while away from home or moving to a keyboard when a bigger battle is brewing.
A Free PC Strategy Option – With A Different Rhythm
Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition will not be for everyone who has spent years mastering the slower, more methodical rhythm of the mainline games. It is built around a different structure and a different tempo.
But as a free PC strategy game, it gives curious players a chance to see what Age of Empires Mobile looks like once the touchscreen controls have been stripped away. Build up your civilisation, join an alliance, choose your heroes and see whether a faster version of empire building suits you.
Just do not go looking for it on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. Despite being available through the Xbox Store and published by Xbox Game Studios, this one is strictly for PC.
