It’s always the way isn’t it? You wait patiently for a new deck-building experience on Xbox and then two arrive on the exact same day through Xbox Game Pass. We’ve already told you about Neoverse and its multiverse, so now we’re shining the spotlight on the unique strategic offering of Monster Train.

When hell freezes over in Monster Train, it’s down to you to protect and preserve the last remaining burning pyre from the heavenly forces, while ultimately hoping to fully restore the inferno. Unlike most roguelike deck-builders, this one brings something fresh to the table in the form of having three vertical playing fields to defend, thus adding a new strategic layer to proceedings.

Within each run through, which will be different every time, you must plan a route carefully as the locations you’ll frequent provide differing benefits. Prepare to upgrade your champion, recruit powerful units, upgrade cards, gain passive bonuses or duplicate any card in your deck along the way. Aside from the main campaign, there’s also the frantic Hellrush mode, which is a multiplayer mode catering for up to eight players to compete in real-time. Each player has the same resources and opponents to create a level playing field, but with the clock ticking away, it’s a test of who can make the best decisions under pressure. Only a true speed demon can remain undefeated here.

Key Features:

  • Five clans, each with 2 different champions who have distinctive abilities. Every hero has their own starter deck.
  • 25 difficulty levels to beat and more. Only the true strategist will reach the top.
  • Hellrush is a frantic multiplayer mode that makes you fight the same run with 7 other players for the best time.
  • Challenge your friends by inviting them to defeat your high score on the leaderboard.
  • Follow your progress, high scores, and unlocks in your logbook.

Furthermore, the version of Monster Train that’s pulled up for the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One includes both of the PC content updates – Wild Mutations and Friends & Foes. Wild Mutations features 35 new mutators to play with, while Friends & Foes introduces new champions, bosses, cards, artifacts and more. It’s going to cost nothing for Xbox Game Pass subscribers to install it via the Xbox Store, however the price is set at £19.99 for the rest of you to own and play it.
