Comedy Built Around Internet Culture
Alt Girl for Skoof – ALTiversary Edition isn’t trying to be a traditional dating sim. Instead, it throws players into an absurd alternate reality where a middle-aged bachelor can simply log into a government service and legally obtain an alt girl companion.
The result is a tongue-in-cheek visual novel that pokes fun at online stereotypes, social trends and internet humour, particularly those rooted in contemporary Russian culture; this as much a comedy as it is an interactive story.
Players can choose between three different alt girls, make dialogue choices throughout the adventure and work towards one of five endings – although, in keeping with the game’s self-aware sense of humour, not every decision changes the outcome as much as you might expect.
Short, Self-Aware And Deliberately Odd
Created by comic book writer Vitaliy Terletski alongside viral video creator RIKANI, Alt Girl for Skoof was intentionally developed as a compact experience rather than an epic visual novel.
It embraces its low-budget origins with plenty of fourth-wall-breaking jokes and self-deprecating humour, while an original soundtrack from Nikita Kryukov – known for Milk outside a bag of milk outside a bag of milk – helps give the experience its own distinctive personality.
It’s certainly not aiming for mainstream appeal, but for players who enjoy surreal humour and visual novels that don’t take themselves too seriously, this may prove to be one of the more unusual releases on the Xbox Store this month.
