From Sicily To The Streets Of New York
American Mafia places players in the polished shoes of Leo Vancetti, whose story begins in 1920s Corleone before carrying him through Venice and eventually into Prohibition-era New York.
Across eight handcrafted chapters, players witness Leo’s transformation from struggling street orphan to one of the most powerful figures in organised crime. Along the way come familiar themes of loyalty, ambition and betrayal, as friendships forged in hardship are tested by the lure of power.
It’s a journey that spans 35 years, with each era bringing its own locations, conflicts and challenges.
More Than Just Gunfights
Much like in 2K’s superb Mafia series, Tommy Guns and gangland shootouts certainly have their place, as American Mafia mixes its action with a variety of gameplay styles.
Earlier chapters see Leo relying on stealth, pickpocketing and parkour to survive, while later missions expand into large-scale firefights, prison escapes and assaults on heavily defended locations. Players won’t always be working alone either, with trusted allies able to provide sniper support or help force their way through enemy defences when situations inevitably spiral out of control.
Expect to take in different stages of Leo’s criminal career, from desperate survival to commanding an organisation powerful enough to shape the city’s future.
Taking the Racket Beyond New Bordeaux
One of the most common complaints from players is that despite spending the entire game tearing down Sal Marcano’s empire piece by piece, Lincoln Clay never actually gets to sit down at the Paradiso’s tables or pull a lever on its slot machines. The casino is a constant presence in the story, but it’s strictly off limits as a mechanic.
For anyone who finished the game craving that missing layer of interactive gambling, the wider industry has plenty to offer. Fans of the organized crime aesthetic can find free mafia slots online, many of which lean into the same roaring twenties or gritty sixties underworld atmosphere that defines New Bordeaux. One standout is Mafia Gold, a slot built around drive-by shootouts and rival gang hits, themes that line up remarkably well with Lincoln’s own revenge-driven campaign.
Every Empire Has Its Rivals
No kingpin stays on top forever. As Leo’s influence grows, rival families, old allies and powerful syndicates all begin circling, threatening to tear apart everything he has built. The game leans heavily into the personal cost of organised crime, presenting a world where every promotion creates another enemy and every victory carries consequences further down the line.
Whether that empire can survive is another matter entirely.
The organised crime genre has produced plenty of memorable games over the years, and American Mafia clearly isn’t shy about embracing the atmosphere that made those stories so enduring. With a globe-spanning campaign, a cast of shifting allies and enemies, and a focus on the long climb to power, it offers Xbox players another opportunity to step into a world where trust is fragile and every decision carries weight.
Just remember one thing – when the rent is due, somebody always pays.
American Mafia is available now on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC with Xbox Play Anywhere support, priced at ÂŁ16.74 from the Xbox Store.
