Anima Gates of Memories I & II Remaster – coming to console and PC

The intriguing and ambitious action-RPG saga, Anima, is getting a second chance to shine, and this time it’s being completely reforged in Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster.

Spanish indie developer Anima Project has officially announced Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster, a unified and rebuilt version of its two acclaimed titles.

The remaster is set to launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam in Fall 2025, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following in 2026.

For fans who followed the original releases, this announcement is a chance to see the full potential of the series realised.

A Saga Reforged, Not Just Remastered

This is far more than a simple HD touch-up. Anima Project is rebuilding both Gate of Memories and its companion story, The Nameless Chronicles, from the ground up and combining them into a single, definitive title.

This unified package promises a host of significant upgrades designed to create the ultimate way to experience the saga. Players can expect fully enhanced visuals fit for modern platforms, alongside completely rebalanced combat and gameplay systems. The goal is to smooth out the rough edges of the original releases and deliver a more fluid, intuitive, and rewarding experience for newcomers and returning fans alike.

Returning to the World of Gaia

For those unfamiliar with the series, Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster plunges players into the rich fantasy universe of Gaia, inspired by the Anima Beyond Fantasy tabletop RPG. The story weaves together two distinct but interconnected fates. One follows The Bearer of Calamities, a legendary monster, and a young girl with amnesia. The other follows The Nameless, an immortal soul cursed to wander the world for eternity.

These characters find themselves unwittingly caught on opposite sides of a war in the shadows, with their choices shaping the narrative and the fate of their world. Players will explore the mysterious Tower of Arcane and an interconnected world forged from memories, all while uncovering a deep and compelling lore.

A Second Chance to Shine on Xbox?

For those of us who followed the series on Xbox before, this announcement will be particularly interesting. The original games were brimming with fantastic ideas and a captivating world, but were not without their flaws.

Our own review of the original Anima: Gate of Memories praised its ambition, stating it was a “rather impressive third-person action RPG which overcomes its visual flaws due to the design of the world, interesting lore and the diverse gameplay.” It laid a foundation of a world we wanted to see more of.

However, the follow-up, Anima: Gate of Memories – The Nameless Chronicles, highlighted some persistent issues. In that review, we concluded it was “very much a game of two halves. A vibrant world, massive back story and compelling narrative are counterpointed by a bad camera, unsatisfying combat and too little guidance… it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to make a memorable RPG.

This remaster, with its specific promises of “rebalanced combat” and “reworked, refined gameplay,” seems to be a direct response to this feedback, running as an opportunity for Anima Project to take the incredible world and lore they built and match it with the polished gameplay it has always deserved.

Key Features of the Remaster

  • Two Epic Stories, One Definitive Game: Experience both Anima: Gate of Memories and Anima: The Nameless Chronicles in a single, enhanced package with reworked visuals and gameplay.
  • A Deep, Dual-Perspective Story: Uncover mysteries through two opposing narratives. Your choices will shape the fate of both protagonists.
  • Dynamic Action-Combat with RPG Depth: Engage in fast-paced battles with spectacular combos and strategic attacks.
  • Unique Combat Systems: Instantly switch between characters to chain attacks with the Dual System, or unleash The Hand of Tanathos as The Nameless to merge with Death itself.
  • An Interconnected World: Explore a fascinating world forged from memories and discover the stories of beings destined to bring about its destruction.

Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster will be delivering the definitive version of this saga on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam) in 2025, with a Nintendo Switch 2 drop to follow.

We’ll be watching eagerly to see if this reforged adventure can finally deliver the masterpiece its rich world has always promised.
