Another Classic Resurfaces

The Arcade Archives 2 range has quickly built a reputation for faithfully reviving older titles with the likes of FINAL LAP and DEVASTATORS, and POLARIS fits neatly into that catalogue. Like the previous releases in the series, the focus here is on authenticity first, keeping the original gameplay intact while layering in a handful of modern conveniences. It’s a formula that has worked well so far, and POLARIS continues that trend without trying to overcomplicate things.

If you’ve dipped into any of the earlier Arcade Archives 2 titles, you’ll already know the approach. This is about preserving the past, not reinventing it.

A Submarine, A Single Weapon, And A Lot Of Trouble

POLARIS keeps things brilliantly simple. You pilot a submarine, moving through hostile waters while firing missiles straight upward. That one limitation shapes everything, forcing you to line up your shots carefully as enemies close in from all sides.

Bombers sweep across the sky, ships patrol above, and mines sit waiting below. It’s a constant balancing act, one that quickly ramps up the pressure the longer you survive.

While the gameplay remains true to its roots, the Arcade Archives 2 framework adds a few helpful touches.

You’ll find options for save states, rewind functionality and adjustable settings, alongside online leaderboards that let you measure your skills against players around the world. VRR support is also included, helping the game feel as smooth as possible on modern hardware.

And then there’s the addition of Time Attack Mode, joining Original, Hi Score and Caravan modes. It’s a small but welcome extra, giving players another way to test themselves beyond chasing points.

A Straightforward Challenge That Still Hooks

Arcade Archives 2 POLARIS doesn’t try to dress itself up as something it isn’t.

It’s a direct, focused arcade shooter that knows exactly what it’s about. For those who have been following the Arcade Archives 2 releases, it’s another solid addition to the lineup. For newcomers, it’s an easy way to step into a very different era of game design.

Just don’t expect it to go easy on you.

You’ll find Arcade Archives 2 POLARIS on the Xbox Store, playable on Xbox Series X|S.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
