Can you remember what you were playing in the mid-1990s? Of course, for many those years would be distant memories, but if you had a pad or joystick in hand, there’s a good chance that you would have been spending it with Beneath a Steel Sky. Now though, as we roll towards 30 years from the release of the original, it’s time to head back to that universe, this time with Beyond a Steel Sky on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

It’s the world of Union City that plays host to the adventures of Beyond a Steel Sky – the spiritual successor to the iconic Beneath a Steel Sky from back in the 1990s. Available to purchase and download right now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch, Beyond a Steel Sky sees you playing as one Robert Foster a game who rocks up in Union City in hope of taking in much adventure.

The thing is Union City isn’t the most pleasent of places and even though this is a wonderfully created sci-fi world, it is one full of dark conspiracies, terrifying antagonists and total surveillance.

Yep, in Union City all eyes will be on you, but that does mean that the cyberpunked world that you navigate your way through can be manipulated as you see fit. Thanks to a rather unique hacking tool that is at your disposal – along with the opportunity to solve puzzles in a variety of ways – you’ll be able to work the system to your needs, hacking, amending and controlling what goes on around you.

A world that promises much, not just to keen Beneath a Steel Sky players from back in the day, but also to those looking for new adventures now, Beyond a Steel Sky certainly promises much. We would however advise you give our full review of the game on Xbox a read prior to stumping up the £33.49 asking price.

If you’re still sold though, expect to find the following key features included in the game…

  • A fascinating sci-fi world – An adventure set within a dynamic world, populated by willful characters driven by motivations that the player can subvert. In combination with a unique hacking tool, multiple solutions to puzzles emerge from player choices.
  • A thrilling story full of humor – Unravel dark conspiracies, defeat a terrifying antagonist in this dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller, which explores contemporary themes: social control, AI, and total surveillance.
  • A unique 3D comic book art style – A beautifully detailed, comic-book styled world, from the mind of legendary comic artist Dave Gibbons.
  • Ingenious puzzles – Intelligent puzzles are interwoven with an intriguing dramatic narrative to deliver a compelling gameplay experience.

Beyond a Steel Sky is available from the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It’s also on PlayStation and Switch too. And if you want to play Beneath a Steel Sky? Well, Steam is your best bet.

Game Description:

From Charles Cecil, creator of the Broken Sword series, with art direction by Dave Gibbons, legendary comic book artist behind ‘Watchmen’, comes ‘Beyond a Steel Sky’, the long awaited sequel to the cult classic ‘Beneath a Steel Sky’. You are Robert Foster. A child has been abducted in a brutal attack. You have vowed to bring him home. But the trail has led you from your community of desert wasteland dwellers, to Union City, one of the last remaining mega-cities in a world ravaged by shattering wars, and political meltdown. Fortified and impenetrable, it is a utopia in which people live happily under the surveillance and control of a benign AI. But all is far from what it seems… ‘Beyond a Steel Sky’ is a dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller in which engaging puzzles drive a fast-paced narrative set in a dynamic gameworld that responds to – and is subverted by – the player’s actions.

I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
