Since their acquisition by Xbox Game Studios in 2018, Obsidian Entertainment have by and large delivered some quality titles, with even more in the works. The likes of Grounded and The Outer Worlds have wowed us in their ambition, and we now have The Outer Worlds 2 to look forward to in the future. Pentiment, however, appears to be a very different beast: one of a profound and informative nature.
Releasing on Xbox and PC – through Game Pass, no less – Pentiment throws you into a rocky 16th century Europe, complete with all the religious, cultural and geopolitical conflict that was at the forefront of things in centuries gone by. The world of Pentiment responds to your decisions, as you attempt to shape the future of your little community, hopefully for the better.
And what a beautiful world it is: inspired by illuminated manuscripts and printed books of the time, your journey with master artist Andreas Maler – the hero of the piece, embroiled in murders and scandals aplenty – will be one where you are constantly in awe of the visuals team over at Obsidian.
As you make your decisions to play out the story, you’ll come across an eclectic mix of characters from a range of social and academic backgrounds – only with an intricate knowledge of the residents of your Bavarian town and the nearby areas can you confidently make the best choices for all.
Not for the faint-hearted, with all the warts of ye olde Europe described in oft traumatic detail, Pentiment is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Whilst available for free for Game Pass subscribers, the game can also be picked up via the Xbox Store for £14.99 today.
You’d do well to keep an eye out for our review.
