Atari 50 expands with The Wider World of Atari

Atari have history richer than most, and with the release of Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection back in 2022, they allowed players the opportunity to embrace it. But now it’s time to welcome in The Wider World of Atari, with a huge new expansion to Atari 50.

Not the first DLC drop for Atari 50, as that came with the addition of 12 new games in the Holiday Content Update, but there’s no doubt that this is the biggest so far. Some 19 games from The Wider World of Atari are getting added to the game on September 26th 2025.

More games!

The Wider World of Atari includes 19 playable games and eight video segments, playing out in a completely new timeline, as we get the opportunity to enjoy a series of deep dives into stories from Atari history, showing how Atari continued to influence creators and fans over the decades.

The DLC will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 & 5. Owners of the original game on the Atari VCS will receive the DLC content for free as part of an update.

But what games? Well, we’ll update this article in due course, but check out the reveal by MetalJesusRocks, who has partnered with Atari for the announce, with a video on YouTube at 10:00AM EST come Wednesday 25th September – that video is now live and available down below.

What’s new from the Wider World of Atari?

We do know what to expect though and in Atari 50: The Wider World of Atari you’ll find all of the following…

  • Unusual and underappreciated Atari 2600 innovations as well as hidden gems from the 1980s
  • A spotlight on the artist Evelyn Seto, who helped create Atari’s iconic logo
  • The community’s quest for unreleased prototypes and the preservation of gaming history
  • Archival and contemporary interviews from employees, fans, and homebrew developers

The Wider World of Atari will include new interviews, vintage ads, historical artifacts, and more, all researched and presented with Digital Eclipse’s signature style.

And highlights from the new timeline include unusual and under-appreciated innovations and hidden gems from the late 1980s; a spotlight on the artist Evelyn Seto, who helped create the iconic “Fuji” Atari logo; Pong creator Al Alcorn explaining the birth of Breakout; and an exploration of the fan base’s role in discovering unreleased prototypes, creating “homebrew” games, and preserving Atari history.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
