Firefighters: Airport Fire Department Review

Like a lot of young kids at the age of five, I really wanted to be fireman when I grew up. It was all about the uniform, the brilliant red fire truck, the sirens, the adventure, the heroism and of course the poles. I couldn’t think of anything better in the world than getting straight out of bed and riding down a pole to work. Well in Firefighters: Airport Fire Department I can live out my lifelong dream of being a fireman. But guess what? There are no poles. This is just the first of many disappointments and the shattering of my dreams.

NBA Live 18 Review

Basketball is one of those sports that I wish I could play. Why? Well for start, it just looks so cool. The kits, the fashion accessories, the street courts, the slam-dunks, the slick passes and the superhuman athletic ability all seem to combine to make one amazing show. When I was younger I loved the Harlem Globe Trotters with their mixture of comedy and incredible skills, whilst in the gaming world I loved the older hoop shooting games from the SNES times, with flaming slam dunks and players with huge heads. I’ve never however got into the more realistic basketball sims of the newest generation of consoles. But can NBA Live 18 make me fall in love with the game all over again?

Take control of robot Kramer 227 as Shiny drops on Xbox One

Platform games on the Xbox One haven’t been as frequent as I would have liked. Who doesn’t love running through levels, bouncing on enemy heads, avoiding traps and pitfalls, while finding secrets in the level design. Well with Garage227's new platform game you can experience all those things once again. Are you ready for Shiny?

Bulb Boy Review

I’m a big fan of the strange and the unusual. If a game which is slightly offbeat comes along, I’ll be the first one buying it and playing it to death. In my most recent gaming history I’ve played some really weird titles, where reality has been distorted, monsters give you nightmares and all kinds of strangeness ensures that your spine will quiver. So when I first went hands-on with Bulb Boy I was feeling confident that it will be something that would just wash over me as it attempted quirkiness, pretty much because I’ve seen it all before. I was wrong.

Shiny Review

It seems like I’ve played a lot of games in the last few months where the main protagonist has been a robot. Generally speaking, they’ve been good experiences and I feel like I’ve bonded with my metal brothers and sisters, and finally understood their plight in this crazy mixed up world of ours. So with Shiny I was pleased to find out I was once again playing as another robot, in a world of robots. But will it adhere to the high standards I now expect? Or will it crash and burn like my robotic vacuum cleaner did last night?

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider Review

Sometimes it feels good to be back doing something you love. It’s like putting slippers on when the house starts to get cold in winter, or flying a kite, or drinking six pints of beer and having a kebab for the first time in years. That same feeling of familiar pleasure is exactly what I had with the first hour of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. But did that pleasure remain or wither like my childhood dreams?

Revolve Review

Do you remember those little maze games you used to get as stocking fillers at Christmas? You had a small box, with a maze inside and you had to negotiate, with great skill, a small silver marble around the maze, while avoiding numerous holes. Well if you do remember that little gift, with its heady mix of pleasure and pain, then I welcome you to its modern day equivalent... Revolve.

Take on fabled monsters as Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen hits Xbox One

Now, you're probably thinking there can’t be many more games from the last generation of consoles to get an updated HD version, eh? Soon they’ll be doing do ultra HD remakes of Xbox One games - mark my words on that. Well Dragons’ Dogma is next on the list and as it was a huge critical success when it first appeared on the Xbox 360 back in the day, it may just be worth checking out.

Stand your ground and Let Them Come as the aliens hit Xbox One

Film and gaming last stands are a common place piece of any hero’s narrative. John Snow facing a whole army with just a sword, Butch and Sundance jumping into battle with the Mexican Army and of course millions of gaming moments where you defend something against the hoard. Are you ready to do it all once more?

The Coma: Recut Review

School can be a very scary place. In my day you had to deal with teachers throwing board cleaners at you, a cross country run that went very close to the army’s shooting range and the horror that was Friday’s lunchtime food choice - the ‘Dinner Ladies Surprise’. In The Coma: Recut, the horror of school is much worse than my petty experiences, as you are dragged into a nightmare world, where everything is contorted and your favorite teacher is hunting you down with an axe. Welcome back to school.

EA SPORTS NHL 18 Review

In the dark old days of the early 90s, ice hockey was pretty much my staple diet in regards to sports videogames. There were many different versions available back then, thus was the popularity of the puck smashing sport in gaming at that time. We loved the fighting, we adored the fast paced action and we still couldn’t work out what the hell “icing’ was. But we knew it was bad. Fast-forward twenty five years and I’m spending some time with the latest ice hockey title - EA SPORTS NHL 18 - and interestingly enough the only one of the year to truly represent the sport. The question is… does it still have that fun playability?

Cuphead finally arrives on Xbox One and PC

It's probably one of the most anticipated Indie games of all time - but now Cuphead is here!

Songbringer Review

How many dungeons have you entered in your gaming lifetime? I think I’ve probably ventured into the tens of thousands. You see, we all drop into these deep holes in the ground, even though we know what to expect - a load of horror, gore and torment. In the real world however I’ve only ever been in two dungeons and there wasn’t anything scary about them whatsoever. There were no chests of gold, no strange creatures, and certainly no huge bosses. Just a damp smell and a couple of candles. Can Songbringer, the new indie game by Wizard Fu give me a better experience than my damp dungeon?

The Coma: Recut now available on Xbox One!

Every now and then I have a dream that I’m back again in school in the 1980s. I still don’t know the correct answers to any of the questions my teacher is asking me. My uniform is really too tight to wear. I’m always late for class and I‘m due a kicking from school's friendly bully at lunch time. Thank god it's all a dream. Well in The Coma: Recut, that world of nightmares and schools are examined and played out in a fresh new take of the horror game genre. And it's all available now.
