Point-and-click puzzlers are fast becoming two-a-penny, but every now and then a new one will release on to the Xbox Store to lift the genre to new heights. That’s the case here and now for When the Past was Around.

Available right now to purchase and download on Xbox One, with it fully playable on Xbox Series X|S, When the Past was Around comes about via the Indonesian developer Mojiken and the publishing team at Chorus Worldwide (they previously behind the stunning Coffee Talk). Sold as a whimsical point-and-click puzzler, this rolls with a narrative based around love, loss and the letting go – and as our full review of When the Past was Around on Xbox points to, it’s well worth checking out.

Priced at just £7.09 and following on from very recent releases on PS4 and Nintendo Switch too, When the Past was Around will have you taking in a puzzling adventure in which you’ll be left searching for clues, solving puzzles and taking in discovering many secrets, all of which are hidden away deep in the mind of Eda, the protagonist.

Told without any form of written word and pushed along by a wonderfully haunting audio scene, it’s easy to see how and why When the Past was Around has managed to scoop up multiple awards, with it taking home the coveted Best Game Award at this year’s Gamescom Indie Arena Booth, whilst the original music, composed by Masdito “ittou” Bachtiar, also won Best Audio at this year’s Taipei Game Show Indie Game Award.

Features include:

â–ª Pictures Paint a Thousand Words – Experience Eda’s world through wordless hand-drawn art created by talented Indonesian artist, Brigitta Rena.

â–ª A Short, Sweet, Whimsical Journey – Explore the bittersweet tale of a girl and her love as players discover secrets in disjointed rooms across different moments in time.

â–ª Personal and Relatable – A game about feeling lost, coming to terms with sorrow, and moving on.

â–ª Brain Teasing Puzzles – Solve intriguing puzzles to unlock hidden memories and help Eda on her journey.

â–ªAward-Winning Music – Atmospheric violin music accompanies players as they experience memories of joyful moments to heart-wrenching sorrow.

Should you be in the market for something delightful, something hugely intriguing and something that will test your brain, grabbing a copy of When the Past was Around on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S should be your next call. The Xbox Store plays host to the usual download, as does the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store. The silly low asking price nearly demands you play it.

Game Description:

When the Past was Around is an adventure point-and-click puzzle game about love, moving on, letting go, and the joy and pain of everything in between. This is the story of Eda, a girl in her early 20s. Like anyone in her age, she’s lost. She lost her way in the journey to achieve her dreams. She lost her way in the journey to find love. That until she met The Owl. The man that would help her burn her passion, the man that would help her find the spark in a relationship, and also the man that would teach her about heartbreak. The game tells a bittersweet tale between a girl and her lover in a surreal world consisting of disjointed rooms from memories and time. With each gathered clue, solved puzzles, and unlocked door, the girl will find her way, unraveling the secrets between her and her lover, the secrets which she used to know.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
