As if there aren’t enough battle royale games on the market these days, with Call of Duty getting in on the act alongside Forza Horizon 4, amongst the usual suspects Fortnite and PUBG. Developers Schine GmbH might have a cunning idea up their sleeve though, with Star99 bringing arcade style shoot ‘em action into the genre on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Star99 may appear like just your typical arcade, vertically-scrolling shoot ‘em up, giving off those old school vibes, but there’s more to it than that. You’ll have to survive the onslaught heading your way while simultaneously competing against other players in matches containing up to 99 people; most of whom could be playing on a different platform thanks to the cross-platform capabilities. Outlast them all and be the last shooter standing by putting in a dominant performance.

Succeeding in Star99 means chaining those enemy kills together and wreaking havoc for the opposition by sending special attacks, as well as bosses, their way. There are six playable characters to get your hands on, each of which possesses their own unique ability and playstyle. Deciding which character suits you best could give you the edge over the rest of the competitors.

Does the intense arcade shoot ‘em up sub-genre of the battle royale world sound enticing enough for you to take the plunge and purchase Star99? If so, you’ll have to make your way to the Xbox Store and pay the relatively small sum of £8.39 – visiting the Nintendo eShop or Steam is also an option. And then you can showcase those seasoned shmup skills, before returning to us and sharing your thoughts on the experience via the comments section below.
