A mystical, narrative-focused experience in which us players get to play the role of the Soothsayer, Grotto has today been announced for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC and mobile.

Coming from the indie publisher Digerati, after being created by those at Brainwash Games (they behind the upcoming Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition), Grotto looks set to release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, PC and iOS later this year, with a Q3/Q4 release window in the works.

Having been in creation since 2018, Grotto will play out as a fantasy narrative adventure in which we get the chance to take on the role of the Soothsayer – a mysterious hermit who is found happily living out life in the titular cave, until they are called upon to read the stars and attempt to provide counsel to a primitive tribe.

It promises to be an altogether outlandish affair as you use your powers of divination to help the tribe with guidance, advice and more. In fact, it is their fate which sits entirely in your hands.

Key features of Grotto include:

  • Look to the sky from the sacred rock, draw the constellations, and read the stars
  • Learn to read the bones and foretell the future or contact those who are gone
  • Get to know your people and help them face their problems
  • Choose wisely your answers as you’ll change the present and future of your tribe. They will thrive or die depending on your words
  • A visual style that mixes 2D and 3D art brings the confined world of Grotto to life

Created by the Madrid-based Brainwash Gang, Grotto is the latest project to emerge from the studio, which is also behind the upcoming Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition, and The Longest Road on Earth. Brainwash founder and developer, Edu Verzinsky, explains why the team wanted to make Grotto:

“Some of us have a genuine interest in divination and have tried different techniques over the years. We like the idea of people’s lives being influenced by something as abstract as the interpretation of the stars,” says Verzinsky. “With Grotto, we hope players will become aware that the extraordinary powers of the protagonist comes from their own empathy when deciding on the life of the tribe.”

If you wish to know more, check out the Grotto announcement trailer below. Alternatively, join the Brainwash team as they hit Twitch at 6pm CEST on Wednesday 21st April with their ‘Brainwash Propaganda’ broadcast. The showcase will highlight the studio’s current projects, which, in addition to Grotto, includes Nongunz: Doppelganger Edition, The Longest Road on Earth, and the much anticipated urban sim sandbox, Damnview: Built From Nothing. The underground game makers will also be revealing some brand new, as-yet-unannounced titles.

So what do you think? Will you be looking to spend time as the Soothsayer in Grotto later this year? Give the trailer a watch, consider wishlisting the game on Steam, and let us know all your thoughts by dropping in to the comments below.

We will of course let you know once a fully confirmed release date for Soothsayer on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S comes about.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
