September is here, and after a relatively quieter summer, the Xbox release calendar is beginning to get seriously busy again.
There’s a strong mix of games arriving this month, too. Capcom is hitting hard with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, while The Blood of Dawnwalker promises a sprawling dark fantasy adventure. Horror fans have plenty to look forward to, racing enthusiasts can get behind the wheel with Hot Wheels Infinite Rush, and Control Resonant looks set to take Remedy’s supernatural universe in another intriguing direction.
There’s plenty beyond the major names as well. Aniimo and Sniper Dan both intrigue, whilst RuneScape: Dragonwilds transforms the legendary franchise into a survival adventure – while also launching into Game Pass on day one.
With ten games making our list, September has something for just about every type of Xbox player. These are the biggest and most exciting new Xbox and Game Pass games to watch out for this month.

Marsupilami 2 – Salsa Palombia – September 3rd
September gets underway with something a little more colourful in the form of Marsupilami 2, a new 2D platforming adventure starring the famously long-tailed heroes.
Palombia has found itself in trouble once again, with the return of the Mummy Queen and a mysterious cursed melody causing the animals of the region to dance uncontrollably. It’s up to the Marsupilamis to uncover what has happened and restore some much-needed order.
Players can take control of three different Marsupilamis, each with their own abilities and strengths. That variety should make exploration more interesting as you work through four different worlds, uncover hidden areas, take on platforming challenges and face a selection of bosses. There are secrets to uncover and additional challenges to discover for those willing to explore beyond the obvious route too.
For a game arriving at the start of a packed month, Marsupilami 2 – Salsa Palombia could provide a welcome dose of colourful platforming before the darker and more intense adventures take over.

The Blood Of Dawnwalker – September 3rd
September’s first major RPG arrives in the form of The Blood of Dawnwalker, a dark fantasy adventure set against a 14th-century Europe devastated by war and the Black Death.
You play as Coen, a young man whose life is changed forever when he becomes a Dawnwalker. With humanity and vampiric powers existing side by side, Coen must use both sides of his nature as he fights to save his family.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the adventure is the pressure placed on your time. Coen doesn’t have unlimited time to accomplish his goals, meaning you’ll have to decide where your priorities lie. Not every problem can necessarily be solved, and the choices you make can shape the direction of the story.
The world itself offers plenty to explore, with forests, mountains, swamps, villages and ruins providing the backdrop for Coen’s journey. The day and night cycle also changes how you’ll approach the world, with different abilities available depending on whether Coen is operating as a human or embracing his vampiric side.
For players looking for a substantial new fantasy adventure, The Blood of Dawnwalker could be one of September’s biggest attractions.

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword – September 4th
Capcom’s legendary samurai series returns with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, putting players in control of Miyamoto Musashi as he battles supernatural forces in Edo-period Kyoto.
Musashi arrives in a city that has been transformed by Malice, with the Genma invading and turning Kyoto into a terrifying battleground. Facing creatures from beyond the natural world, Musashi must make use of the Oni Gauntlet and its supernatural powers if he hopes to survive.
At its heart, this is a sword-fighting adventure, with Musashi facing dangerous enemies and powerful warriors as he attempts to prove himself as the greatest swordsman. The setting should also be a major part of the appeal. A corrupted Kyoto provides a striking backdrop for the action, mixing historic Japanese environments with the series’ trademark supernatural horror.
And our review of Onimusha: Way of the Sword is up and live too. A 4.5/5 score is nothing to be sniffed at.

Halloween – September 8th
Horror fans don’t have to wait long before September delivers another major attraction, with Halloween bringing Michael Myers to Xbox.
Set during Halloween night in 1978, the game recreates the atmosphere of Haddonfield while allowing players to experience the nightmare from different perspectives. One player takes on the role of Michael Myers, while others attempt to survive as the Heroes of Haddonfield.
The big draw? That will be the tension between hunter and hunted. Michael can stalk his victims, make use of the environment and strike when his targets least expect it, while the Heroes need to work together, use what they can find and try to survive the night.
There’s also a standalone single-player story that explores the events surrounding Michael’s return, giving fans another way to experience the Halloween universe.
For fans of the Halloween franchise, the opportunity to step into Michael Myers’ shoes is likely to be the biggest attraction of all.

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush – September 10th
If you’re after something considerably faster, Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is ready to put the pedal down.
The game expands the Hot Wheels experience into a large world featuring four islands, each packed with activities, challenges and secrets to discover. You’ll be able to choose from four different vehicle types – Versatiles, Titans, Drifters and Speeders – each offering a different approach to racing.
There’s also a huge collection of more than 150 vehicles to acquire and customise, giving players plenty of scope to build their ideal garage.
And then you’ve got the Track Builder too. Rather than simply racing on pre-designed circuits, you’ll be able to create your own tracks around the world, weaving routes through different environments and building increasingly wild challenges.
The multiplayer options add even more to the package, with split-screen support for up to four players alongside online multiplayer and cross-play.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds – September 15th – Game Pass Day One
RuneScape: Dragonwilds takes one of gaming’s most familiar fantasy universes and gives it a very different spin.
Set on the forgotten continent of Ashenfall, the game combines survival, crafting, exploration and RPG progression as players attempt to survive a dangerous land where dragons have awakened. You’ll gather resources, construct your own base and develop skills as you explore the world. But don’t worry, familiar RuneScape elements remain part of the experience, with quests, progression and abilities giving the survival formula a distinct RPG flavour.
You can tackle the adventure alone or team up with other players, making Dragonwilds an intriguing option for those who enjoy cooperative survival experiences.
Most importantly for Xbox players, RuneScape: Dragonwilds launches into Game Pass on day one. That makes it one of the easiest games on this month’s list to recommend trying.

Aniimo – September 16th
Creature collecting meets open-world exploration in Aniimo, a free-to-play RPG set within the colourful world of Idyll.
The game’s creatures, known as Aniimo, are at the centre of the experience. Players can discover and collect them before forming a bond that allows them to “Twine” with their creatures and experience the world through their abilities. That relationship isn’t simply cosmetic either and different Aniimo can provide new ways to navigate the environment, solve puzzles and deal with challenges, while the creatures themselves can develop and evolve as they grow stronger.
With its combination of creature collecting, exploration, customisation and multiplayer, Aniimo could prove an appealing alternative for anyone looking for a new world to get lost in this September.

Sniper Dan – September 17th
The premise is simple: Dan is a sniper, but rather than using his rifle to eliminate enemies, he’s using it to solve problems. Players will explore a variety of colourful environments, identify what’s gone wrong and use precise shooting to put things right.
That turns the familiar idea of a sniper game into something closer to a hidden-object adventure. You’ll need to carefully examine your surroundings, identify the right target and make the perfect shot.
The game includes a variety of locations and optional jobs, while additional modes provide further challenges beyond the main adventure. Time Attack and Ammo Hunt are designed to test your skills in different ways, while Photo Mode gives you the opportunity to take in the game’s colourful world.
It might not be the biggest release for this month, but Sniper Dan is certainly one of the more distinctive games – and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Control Resonant – September 24th
Remedy’s supernatural universe expands with Control Resonant, another strange and mysterious adventure set within the world established by Control.
This time, players step into the role of Dylan Faden, who has spent years confined by the Federal Bureau of Control. When he finally emerges, he finds a world experiencing an escalating supernatural crisis.
The setting moves beyond the familiar confines of the Oldest House, opening up a distorted version of Manhattan for players to explore. A mysterious cosmic entity is changing the environment around it, while supernatural threats create dangers throughout the city.
Dylan’s newly acquired abilities will be central to his survival, with the protagonist forced to confront the strange forces reshaping the world around him. But there is also a deeply personal motivation behind his journey…

EA Sports FC 27 – September 25th
EA Sports FC 27 needs no introduction, but it arrives to kick off another season of virtual football.
The latest entry focuses on making matches feel more responsive and dynamic, with improvements to areas including attacking awareness, defending and set pieces. But there’s also plenty happening away from the traditional match experience.
A major new addition is The Grounds, a social football space where players can meet up, take part in Kickabouts and 1v1 matches, and spend time with friends in Clubs.
Career is also receiving attention, with a rebuilt Transfer Market designed to make transfers more dynamic. Meanwhile, Ultimate Team introduces the FUT Gallery, giving players another way to collect and display their favourite Player Items.
As always, authenticity remains an important part of the package, with thousands of real-world players represented across the game.
Whether you’re returning for another year of Ultimate Team, or simply want to play football with friends, EA Sports FC 27 will once again be one of the most prominent sports releases on the Xbox calendar.
