Beyond Words Is A Must-Play For Scrabble And Puzzle Fans

-

2026's Best Games

There’s a moment in Beyond Words where you realise this isn’t just about finding the longest word you can. It’s about planning three moves ahead, setting up chains, and watching a single well-placed letter spiral into something far bigger than expected.

Now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC, Beyond Words from MindFuel Games and PQube blends wordplay with roguelike strategy, turning a familiar idea into something far more layered.

More Than Just Spelling

At first glance, Beyond Words looks like a traditional word puzzle.

But it doesn’t take long before things start to shift. Every letter you place feeds into a larger system of modifiers, bonuses and evolving rules. You’re not just trying to score points, you’re building combos, shaping the board and thinking about how each move impacts what comes next.

It’s a game where creativity matters just as much as vocabulary.

Building Combos, Breaking The Rules

What really drives Beyond Words is the sheer number of ways you can play. With over 300 modifiers, abilities and upgrades, each run becomes its own experiment. You might duplicate letters, boost scores, destroy unwanted tiles or stack effects in ways that completely change how the game behaves.

Some runs are slow and methodical, others become chaotic and fast-paced. That flexibility is what keeps things fresh.

And no two boards feel quite the same. Layouts shift, objectives evolve and challenges adapt as you progress. You’ll need to think strategically, planning routes across the board and setting yourself up for bigger plays down the line. And just when you feel comfortable, bosses arrive to twist the rules even further, forcing you to rethink everything you’ve learned.

Already One Of The Best In The Genre?

We thought Beyond Words would be good, which is why we included it in our Best Games of April article. But since then, we’ve also spent time with Beyond Words, and it left a serious impression.

In our 5/5 review, we called it “the Scrabble-like Balatro-inspired word-puzzler you should be playing… a near-infinitely replayable playground of letters and logic.”

That sense of endless possibility is very real, especially once you start unlocking more of what the game has to offer. Just be warned, it does expect a solid grasp of the English language, and it won’t hold your hand for long.

A Word Game That Thinks Bigger

Beyond Words takes a familiar concept and stretches it in all the right directions.

By blending strategy, roguelike elements and creative freedom, it offers something that feels both accessible and surprisingly deep. If you enjoy word games but want something with a bit more bite, this is one that’s well worth your time.

Just don’t be surprised if it keeps pulling you back in.

You’ll find Beyond Words on the usual digital storefronts, like that of the Xbox Store. Expect to pay around ÂŁ12.99.
