We gamers know that the combo of a shotgun and the squishy insides of a zombie go together very well indeed. Developers Light Road Games seem to also be familiar with this fact, as their zombie shooter Blood Waves, first released back in March 2019, is now receiving a new-gen update.
Releasing today on Xbox Series X|S and PS5, Blood Waves is back and bloodier than ever, looking to improve upon the original release’s less than stellar review scores. We only managed to give it a 1.5/5 in our full review – a score consistent with those seen elsewhere – so we are hoping for a tad more originality as the game comes to pastures new.
Inspired by the likes of Days Gone, with perhaps a little bit of Rebellion’s Strange Brigade thrown in, Blood Waves puts you in the shoes of a Lara Croft-alike as she battles against seemingly endless waves of zombies, in large colosseum-esque rooms. As you manage to dispatch of enough zeds, this sees further rooms open up, and also grants you skill points to spend on upgrades. Shoot more baddies, upgrade more stuff, shoot even more baddies. It’s some of that ‘switch your brain off’ gaming that we all crave once in a while.
However, where you will be asked to think on your feet is in the use of traps and barricades that aid in the zombie killing, as well as taking on a number of different zombie types, some of which (ironically) have the brains to outwit your traps.
Throw in shotguns, RPGs and a wealth of further weapons, and you have all the tools required to survive the outbreak.
If you happen to be own a copy of the Xbox One version of Blood Waves, you are entitled to a 50% discount on the Xbox Series X|S upgrade. The same discount is also applied if you are upgrading from the PS4 to the PS5 version of the game. To pick up a fresh copy of Blood Waves on Xbox Series X|S, that’ll set you back £8.39 – you can find it over on the Xbox Store.
Hardcore and bloody shooter where you will have to repel the attacks of the living dead using the destroying traps, defensive barricades and also weapon of close and long-range combat. Destroy zombies, get the cash and prepare yourself for the next wave. During the break you can buy necessary weapon, place the traps and defensive barricades, repair the traps survived in the previous wave. And of course, don’t forget to check the stock of bullets and restore your health. Different types of zombie possess the distinctive features. There are enemies with long-distance attack as well as cleverer zombies avoiding certain traps. Choose the optimal survival strategy. For the most successful game you will need to control expenditure of the earned resources. The time of your survival depends on it.
