Blast N Bounty – embracing the old school

Old-school shoot ’em ups never really go out of fashion, and Blast’N Bounty is looking to prove exactly why.

Launching today on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC with Xbox Play Anywhere, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, this arcade-inspired vertical scroller combines colourful pixel art with low-poly 3D visuals in a quest fuelled by revenge.

Available for ÂŁ4.19, it’s a budget-friendly blast from the past that puts fast reflexes and smart power-up management firmly in the spotlight.

Revenge Takes Flight

The unlikely hero of Blast’N Bounty is Quad, a frog who has traded his criminal past for life as a space bounty hunter. Unfortunately, some grudges refuse to stay buried.

After being betrayed by his former first mate, Quad returns years later with one goal in mind – tracking down the mafia’s seven powerful generals before finally confronting the organisation’s leader. Rather than following a fixed path, players are free to tackle those seven targets in the order they choose, building towards one final showdown.

Classic Arcade Gameplay With Modern Touches

Blast’N Bounty proudly wears its SHMUP arcade influences on its sleeve, but it isn’t simply trying to recreate games from decades past.

While the action sticks to the familiar vertical scrolling formula, modern widescreen presentation, fluid animations and responsive controls help give the experience a more contemporary feel. It’s easy enough to jump into, but surviving the toughest encounters will still require quick reactions and careful positioning.

Upgrade Your Ship And Choose Your Strategy

Success isn’t just about dodging incoming fire.

Throughout each run you’ll collect upgrade flasks to strengthen your ship while also unlocking a selection of drones that fight alongside you. Each drone behaves differently, allowing players to experiment with loadouts that best suit their preferred style of play.

Combined with eight challenging stages and the freedom to choose your route through much of the campaign, there’s plenty of incentive to keep refining your approach.

Time To Collect Those Bounties?

Eastasiasoft has published no shortage of retro-inspired releases over the years, and Blast’N Bounty continues that trend with a colourful shooter that looks to capture the spirit of classic arcade favourites while adding a handful of modern conveniences.

If you’re in the mood for explosions, boss battles and high-score chasing, this latest release could be well worth a look.

Blast’N Bounty is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC with Xbox Play Anywhere support (all through the Xbox Store), PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. You’ll find it priced around ÂŁ4.19.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
