Five years after the original challenged Xbox players with its unusual blend of puzzle mechanics and fantasy combat, Bone Marrow 2 has arrived to build on those ideas.
Once again inspired by the addictive gameplay of 2048, the sequel adds new heroes, day-and-night strategy and more tactical decision-making as you fight to survive another grim fantasy world.
Available now for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC in three separate versions, Bone Marrow 2 is priced at £4.19.

More Than Just Matching Tiles
At first glance, Bone Marrow 2 still resembles the game that came before it.
The familiar 2048-style mechanics remain at its core, but instead of simply combining numbers, you’ll be merging equipment and survival resources. Matching food restores health, combining weapons increases your offensive power, while armour improves your defences. Every merge presents another decision – strengthen your current equipment, prepare for future battles, or gamble on building something even stronger.
However, one of the biggest additions comes through the game’s day-and-night cycle. During daylight hours, you’ll have the freedom to organise the board, merge resources and stockpile supplies for what lies ahead. Once darkness falls, however, your options become far more limited. You’ll need to work with whatever is immediately available, crafting weapons, brewing potions and trying to stay alive until morning returns.
Combined with a new roster of magic users and ranged heroes wielding grimoires, staffs and enchanted bows, the sequel aims to offer more variety than simply repeating the original’s formula.
The hand-drawn art style also helps reinforce the bleak fantasy setting, giving every successful merge a little more weight as another dangerous night approaches.
A Chance To Improve On The Original
We reviewed the original Bone Marrow back in 2021, awarding it 2.5/5. At the time, we felt its 2048-inspired mechanics didn’t quite do enough to separate themselves from the countless free versions already available elsewhere.
As we said in our review: “Bone Marrow is an affordable game and it does give an easy 1000G, but there are free games that have similar mechanics, and are far more enjoyable. It’s hard to recommend.“
Bone Marrow 2 now has the opportunity to address some of those criticisms. The expanded tactical systems, new heroes and day-and-night structure certainly suggest there’s more depth this time around, although we’ll need to spend some time with it before seeing whether those additions truly elevate the experience.
