Broken Sword The Smoking Mirror Reforged – coming in 2026

The ancient conspiracy is reawakening, and the fate of the world once again rests in the hands of an unlikely duo.

Revolution Software has today lifted the lid on the development of Broken Sword – The Smoking Mirror: Reforged, a faithful reimagining of the beloved second game in the multi-award-winning adventure series.

This substantially enhanced edition, presented in stunning 4K, is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Coinciding with the announcement, Revolution are looking to launch a page for the game on Kickstarter, inviting fans to sign up for updates on this eagerly anticipated return to one of gaming’s most cherished point-and-click sagas.

A Legacy of Gripping Adventure

The Broken Sword series holds a special place in the hearts of adventure game fans, renowned for its compelling narratives, clever puzzles, and unforgettable characters. We’ve certainly enjoyed our time with the franchise; we reviewed Broken Sword 5: The Serpent’s Curse a decade ago, noting it was “everything I was expecting and more,” and wished it had been “a few more hours” longer.

This new Reforged edition builds on the success of Broken Sword – Shadow of the Templars: Reforged, which launched in 2024 and was hailed for setting “a new standard for how to make point-and-clicks more accessible in this modern day.

This proves Revolution’s commitment to both a new generation of players and existing fans, ensuring a modern experience that still honours the classic.

Unravelling the Smoking Mirror

Broken Sword – The Smoking Mirror: Reforged once again puts players in the shoes of American tourist George Stobbart and the sharp-witted French journalist Nico Collard. Their adventure plunges them into a deadly Mayan conspiracy steeped in ancient artifacts and dark magic, taking them across Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America.

The game’s iconic locations are now illustrated in beautiful high definition, coupled with crisp audio for the first time. Crucially, players will be able to switch between the original 1997 visuals and the new reforged look at the click of a button, offering the best of both worlds.

Revolution Software is also introducing new ways to play, catering to all types of adventure game fans. You can choose between a ‘traditional mode’ for those who enjoy adventures as they used to be, or a ‘story mode’ for players who prefer subtle hints to ensure they never get frustrated by a tricky puzzle.

A Word from the Creators

Charles Cecil, founder and CEO of Revolution Software, expressed his excitement for this new project.

“The Smoking Mirror has always been one of our most loved games, and with Reforged we were able to enhance it in ways that respect the original while making it shine for modern audiences,” says Charles Cecil, founder and CEO of Revolution Software. “Just as with the first game, we can’t wait for players old and new to experience it again.”

The terrifying Smoking Mirror is once again revealing its secrets, and the stage is set for a faithfully reimagined classic. With its stunning 4K visuals, enhanced audio, and flexible gameplay modes, Broken Sword – The Smoking Mirror: Reforged is poised to be an unmissable adventure for fans old and new when it arrives in early 2026.

Keep an eye on its Kickstarter page, and we’ll keep you looped as and when further news drops. There’s a Steam page too.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
