The bobcat is out of the bag once again, and this time, he’s leaping into a whole new dimension with Bubsy 4D.
Atari and Fabraz have officially announced Bubsy 4D, marking the return of the infamous mascot in his first 3D adventure since 1996.
This colourful and expressive new platformer is coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch platforms, and PC.
Revealed with a brand-new announcement trailer, this new title aims to finally deliver a truly great game for one of gaming’s most memorable – for better or worse – characters.
What Could Possibly Go Wrong… Again?
The phrase “What could possibly go wrong?” has become synonymous with the Bubsy franchise, a series with a long and very checkered history.
We’ve seen the bobcat’s past adventures bundled up in up-coming collections like Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection, but this new announcement is something else entirely.
Bubsy 4D is a direct follow-up to the notoriously panned Bubsy 3D, a challenge that the talented team at Fabraz (Demon Turf) is tackling head-on.
A Furmidable New Adventure
The fabric-stealing alien race, the Woolies, are back at it again, this time stealing Earth’s sheep to empower them with their technology. However, their plan backfires when the sheep revolt, creating a new army of robotic “BaaBots” who overthrow their captors and set their sights on claiming The Golden Fleeces.
Now, it’s up to Bubsy and his motley crew of acquaintances – including familiar friends Terri, Terry, Virgil, and Oblivia – to journey through space, defeat the BaaBots, and steal back the Golden Fleece.
Platforming Purrfection?
Bubsy 4D is a modern 3D platformer that blends nostalgic charm with expressive, modern movement mechanics.
You will run, jump, glide, and roll across a series of vibrant, fabric-and-craft-themed alien planets. You can choose to tackle the levels with careful, precise platforming, or you can blast through them in Bubsy’s new, speedy hairball form. Each planet will end with an epic BaaBot boss battle.
As you explore, you can spend collected yarn to purchase stylish new outfits for Bubsy. You can also find hidden blueprints to unlock powerful new moves, and even test your speed by racing against other players’ ghost data in online time trials. All of this is set to a “pawsitively funky” new soundtrack from Fat Bard.
A Word from the Creators
The teams at Atari and Fabraz are fully aware of Bubsy’s legacy and are excited to give him a fresh start.
“Bubsy has always had a reputation – some of it notable, some of it infamous,” said Ethan Stearns, VP of Games at Atari. “But through it all, Bubsy has remained memorable, and we felt the character deserved a truly great game behind it. In teaming up with Fabraz, we believe we’ve finally delivered just that with Bubsy 4D: a fresh take that both respects the past and brings something entirely new to the table.”
“It’s been a wild ride to work on a sequel to Bubsy 3D, considering its infamous legacy,” said Fabian Rastorfer at Fabraz. “It was really important for us to take this challenge seriously by both identifying what’s made the bobcat stick around for so long, while also reinventing parts of the series to work better. I believe Bubsy’s move-set is stronger than ever and anyone who’s played our previous games will feel right at home with this Expressive 3D Platformer.“
A new chapter in one of gaming’s most unlikely stories is about to begin. With a talented and respected indie developer at the helm, Bubsy 4D has a genuine shot at redemption.
We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this one as we await a firm release date in the coming months.
