The Outlast Trials Season 3 Project Relapse

Prepare for a terrifying new phase of experimentation – it’s time for Season 3 of The Outlast Trials.

Season 3: Project Relapse for Red Barrels’ co-op survival horror game, The Outlast Trials, launches today, bringing a wealth of chilling new content, including a powerful Trial Maker mode and a relentless new foe, all as a free update for existing players on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC (Steam/Epic).

The Outlast Trials thrusts players into Murkoff Corporation’s twisted Cold War-era experiments, challenging squads of up to four Reagents (human guinea pigs) to survive horrific trials filled with monstrous enemies and escape room-style puzzles.

In our review of The Outlast Trials, we gave it a 4/5 score, stating: “You may miss the straightforward single-player experience of previous Outlast games, but in The Outlast Trials the cooperative multiplayer experience feels original and well thought out. Fun to play with friends, it can be as scary as hell, but should things all get too much, at least you can take a break and play some chess through those night vision goggles that are screwed into your head.

Now, Season 3 extinguishes all hope of escape and ushers in a grim new reality.

Project Relapse Begins: No More Rebirth

The narrative takes a dark turn. “Nobody’s leaving. No more release. No more rebirth.” Amelia’s escape attempt has failed, and she now serves as a harrowing example displayed in the Sleep Room. Project Rebirth is officially over, replaced by the “Relapse Initiative.”

This new system allows Reagents who reach the maximum therapy level (99) to reset their progress to Level 1 in exchange for powerful permanent upgrades and other rewards. As of 10 am ET today, the Rebirth hallway is sealed indefinitely.

Face The Jaeger and Craft Your Own Trials

Season 3 introduces significant new gameplay elements:

  • New Enemy – The Jaeger: Designed by Dr. Easterman to punish disobedient Reagents, The Jaeger is a slow, hyper-focused, remotely guided killer. She relentlessly hunts her assigned target and will stop at nothing until they are eliminated. Evasion is your only option.
  • New Mode – Trial Maker: Unleash your inner Murkoff scientist! This powerful creative toolset allows players to build, name, and share their own custom Trials. Combine existing Trials, MK-Challenges, and Variators to devise unique gauntlets to test the skills (and sanity) of fellow Reagents.
  • New Content: Explore the unsettling new Suburbs trial environment in a new story trial, and test your limits in two new MK-Challenges.

Key Features of Season 3: Project Relapse

  • Free Update: Available today for all owners of The Outlast Trials.
  • New Enemy: The Jaeger: A relentless, remotely guided hunter.
  • New Mode: Trial Maker: Create, customize, and share your own terrifying Trials.
  • New Content: Explore the Suburbs environment in a new Story Trial and tackle 2 new MK-Challenges.
  • Relapse Initiative: A new prestige system for max-level players offering permanent upgrades.
  • Lore Progression: Witness the grim aftermath of Amelia’s capture and the end of Project Rebirth.

Return to the Trials… If You Dare

The Outlast Trials Season 3: Project Relapse significantly expands the horrifying co-op experience with creative new tools, a terrifying new threat, and a darker narrative direction. Gather your friends, steel your nerves, and prepare to face Murkoff’s latest horrors – or build them yourself.

The free update is rolling out today across all platforms. If you don’t have a copy of the game, head to the usual digital stores, the Xbox Store for example.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
