A Hopping Good Time or a Hare-Raising Bore?
Now, I am going to be honest with you from the start of these thoughts surrounding Bunny Cubed – it’s going to be hard to get a full review out of a game as simple as this one is. That’s not to say it’s not fun and addictive, but there really isn’t much to it.
So instead, let’s start this review with a few facts about rabbits to warm us up. Are you ready for some education? Great, because these could be more interesting than the game itself.
Anyways, rabbits have brilliant hearing and can turn their ears 180 degrees to pinpoint a sound. Further to this, due to an old 17th-century law, rabbits are banned on ferries to this day. This was due to them, back in the day, chewing through the hull.
Right, that’s enough of that, so let’s get on with the game, Bunny Cubed.
Cuboid Puzzles and Block-Pushing Bliss
Developed by Eastasiasoft and running a low price, Bunny Cubed is an isometric puzzler featuring, you guessed it, a bunny. There isn’t a story here or any cutscene explaining the backstory of this little cuboid bunny and why they love to push blocks around.
It doesn’t matter though, as the puzzle elements of the game, and its mechanics, are the main focus. If you were pushed, you could make up a backstory; perhaps an alcoholic bunny has gone on the hunt for booze, thinking it could well be hidden under a host of blocks. No? Let’s move on.
Sixty Levels of Simple Shifts
You are tasked with completing sixty levels set in a grid-like maze, moving blocks onto the right hotspots to complete each level. The bunny itself can only move horizontally and vertically across the grid, and from there it can nudge the blocks to move them.
Bunny Cubed starts with just two blocks, with you needing to shift them to complete the puzzle at the beginning. But by the end of the game, you will be found moving six blocks and finding homes for them on various hotspots.
The thing is, in your way are maze walls, and much like in any block pusher, you don’t want to trap your blocks against those. There are also little carrot fields that you can’t move across. The good news is that if you find yourself putting a block into a stalemate where it can’t get to its destination, you can restart the level with ease.
Addictive Simplicity
You should really know what to expect from Bunny Cubed, but is it addictive? I think it is, and once you start, it’s most certainly a game that is hard to put down. Better still, it’ll only take you around an hour to complete things, running through it in one sitting.
The levels can be completed in a host of different ways, and once you get your eye in, it becomes quite easy to finish. That’s my one main criticism of the game: Bunny Cubed isn’t very challenging. Yes, there are more blocks to move as you progress further into the levels, but the maps are never too hard to navigate.
Personally, I feel it would have been an idea to add a few more different mechanics towards the middle or end of the game. In fact, it is so stress-free that over the course of the sixty levels, I only had to restart five times. By the end of the game, I was so in the zone I didn’t need to restart at all, and I am well-documented as being an idiot gamer.
Basic Charm and Ambient Sounds
The visuals of Bunny Cubed are, as you would imagine, quite basic but at the same time fairly pleasant on the eye. Everything is block-shaped, including the grid environments, the rabbit itself, and, of course, the blocks. However, the menus are clean and easy to navigate.
You’ll think similar for the soundtrack, which is extremely ambient. In fact, writing this now, I can’t remember a single thing about the audio included.
A Budget-Friendly Puzzle for Achievement Hunters
So, is Bunny Cubed worth your time? Well, yes. Bunny Cubed is a simple game, one that is well-made, and tempting enough to drag you through to the final levels. There is a lack of challenge, and that will put a few people off, and maybe some would expect games like this to have a few more levels for the price.
But the advantages are that it is a cheap experience, and if you’re a bit of an achievement hunter, will see you given 2000 Gamerscore, all for just getting to the end in the space of an hour.
