There aren’t too many Mahjong games that come with a story. You’re usually presented with a stack of tiles, asked to match pairs, and left to quietly work your way through dozens of puzzles. Eco Mahjong takes a slightly different approach.
Yes, the tile-matching remains front and centre, but this time there’s an entire town to save along the way.
Available now on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Eco Mahjong combines classic Mahjong gameplay with an environmental restoration storyline, tasking players with helping revive the struggling town of Greenville one puzzle at a time.

More Than Just Matching Tiles
The setup is pretty ambitious for a Mahjong title. Greenville, once a thriving town, has fallen victim to pollution and environmental neglect. Rivers have been contaminated, wildlife has disappeared and a thick layer of smog hangs over the community. Enter the Walkers, a travelling animal family determined to put things right.
As players complete Mahjong puzzles, they’ll gradually help restore the town, planting flowers, growing trees and bringing life back to the local environment.
Standing in the way is the delightfully named Evil, Inc., a company apparently doing its best to ensure Greenville’s ecological recovery doesn’t go to plan.
Over 100 Puzzles To Clear
Of course, story only gets you so far in a Mahjong game. The real attraction are the more than 100 levels of traditional tile-matching gameplay. Players will work through a wide variety of layouts, pairing matching tiles while gradually progressing through the restoration of Greenville.
The developers are also promising clear tile designs and a straightforward approach, which will likely appeal to Mahjong veterans and newcomers alike.
A Fresh Angle For A Familiar Genre
We’ve seen plenty of Mahjong games arrive on Xbox over the years, with varying degrees of success.
When we reviewed Mahjong – Xbox Series X|S, we noted that while it offered a no-frills take on the classic formula, there were stronger alternatives available elsewhere. Similarly, Mahjong Adventure DX attempted to add extra ideas to the genre, though not all of them landed quite as successfully as intended.
Eco Mahjong appears to be taking a different route altogether. Rather than reinventing the core gameplay, it’s wrapping the familiar puzzle mechanics inside a more engaging progression system, giving players a reason to keep pushing forward beyond simply clearing another board.
Whether that proves enough to stand out remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a more interesting premise than many Mahjong releases we’ve covered.
Time To Clean Up Greenville?
Eco Mahjong is available now through the Xbox Store, playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
If you’re a fan of traditional Mahjong and fancy something with a little more purpose behind the tile matching, helping restore a polluted town could be a pleasant change of pace. At the very least, it’s proof that even a centuries-old puzzle game can still find new ways to present itself.
