Pirate Trails Tentacles and Treasures
Pirate Trails Tentacles and Treasures – out now!

The most beloved pirate puzzle game has returned… or at least, that’s what the developer is hoping.

Pirate Trails 2: Tentacles & Treasures, the sequel to a game we were less than fond of, has launched today, 8th October 2025. This new voyage from Afil Games is now available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with prices starting at just £4.19.

With new maps, new dangers, and a whole lot more tentacles, the big question is: can this sequel chart a better course than its predecessor?

A Voyage We’ve Taken Before

Let’s be honest, our first trip with this series was not a smooth one. When we reviewed the original game, in our 2/5 review of Pirate Trails, we called it a “below average gaming experience that will be forgotten as that last achievement ping is heard.” We found that while it worked mechanically, it failed to “ever test the mind.

With Pirate Trails 2: Tentacles & Treasures, Afil Games has a chance to prove that there’s real treasure to be found in this concept, and not just another quick Gamerscore boost.

Tentacles, Treasures, and Gunpowder

The core gameplay remains a clever path-building puzzle. You don’t directly control the ship; instead, you rotate, swap, and place hexagonal puzzle pieces to create a perfect route. Once the route is ready, you press the button and watch your ship sail along your clever strategy.

This new adventure will take you across 30 handcrafted levels spread across three unique biomes: the introductory Tortuga, the more complex Royal Port, and the ultimate challenge of Nassau.

The big new twist this time is the Kraken. Its tentacles will block your path, and you’ll need to collect barrels of gunpowder to clear them and prevent your ship from becoming sushi.

Choose Your Vessel

Pirate Trails 2: Tentacles & Treasures is available on the Xbox Store in a few different packages:

It’s important to note that this release does not support Xbox Play Anywhere.

You’ll also find the Captain’s Style DLC available for 79p, again with three versions.

Dive in with that and you’ll get access to new skins.

Your Treasure Map

Here’s what you can expect from this new hexagonal puzzle adventure:

  • The Sequel to the Critically-Panned Pirate Trails.
  • Hex-Based Puzzle Routes: You don’t control the ship; you control its fate.
  • New Kraken Mechanic: Use gunpowder to kill krakens and clear deadly obstacles.
  • 30 Handcrafted Levels across three exotic biomes: Tortuga, Port Royal, and Nassau.

A new course has been plotted, but the destination is uncertain. If you’re a fan of Afil Games’ particular brand of puzzlers, or you’re just curious to see if this sequel can right the wrongs of the original, Pirate Trails 2: Tentacles & Treasures is waiting for you on the Xbox Store right now.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
