Combining Among Us and Don’t Starve elements comes Project Winter for Xbox and Xbox Game Pass

Whilst Among Us may have taken the plaudits in recent months for its take on the whole deception genre, truth is it’s taken a while for it to really come to the fore. It’s not the only deceptive affair that has been doing the gaming rounds either, with Project Winter already having spent a couple of years on PC. Now though it’s coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with full debut being found via Xbox Game Pass for good measure. Want all the dates and details?

Project Winter comes from the team at Other Ocean Interactive, pushing out a rather pioneering take on the social deception theme that has seen Among Us take over the lives of many. After being placed on Steam back in 2019, picking up more than a million players in the process, it’s now time to venture out into the cold harsh landscapes of the Xbox world, with full cross-play support in place.

Coming to Xbox and Xbox Game Pass on January 26th 2021 as well as the Windows 10 Store for good measure, Project Winter will see players dropped into one of the most harsh worlds found in gaming terms. Running an eight-person multiplayer approach, players will find themselves cut off from all external sources, bereft of communication and covered not just with a blanket of ice, but one full of paranoia and suspicion.

From there, things will play out as those involved try to survive, working through the freezing wilderness together in the hope that they can survive. But as this happens the deadly intentions of other players will come to the fore, with traitors left to deceive, sabotage and murder their teammates. With a variety of weapons to hand, your own personal hope of survival may just be determined by how you go about dealing with others first.

Project Winter will include the usual crafting and resource gathering elements that any decent survival title requires – hence the similarity with Don’t Starve – and on launch on Xbox come Jan 26th, players will have access to everything that PC gamers have been treated to – expect not just cross-play ideas, but full text chat, emotes and proximity voice channels to build the immersion.

“We are excited that Project Winter will launch with crossplay so that Xbox and Windows 10 players will be able to join the community of over one million survivors who’ve been uncovering traitors, backstabbing their teammates, and battling the elements since the game’s launch,” said Other Ocean’s Product Director, Ryan Hale.  “Project Winter’s innovative proximity-based voice chat encourages players to stick together and work in groups to survive,” says Hale. “Solo players that wander off run the risk of having their desperate cries for help rendered useless when running into trouble.”

If you’re up for a challenging tale of sabotage, betrayal and surviving in a world that is frequented by starving grizzly bears, keep an eye out for Project Winter when it drops on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Game Pass and Windows 10 Store come January 26th 2021. We’ll be sure to remind you when that time arrives.

We’ll have a full review of Project Winter on Xbox for your eyes too. Keep a look out for it.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore. Gamertag is neil363, feel free to add me to your list.
