What could the cover star and debut trailer reveal mean for WWE 2K18?

-

Being one of the biggest brands in entertainment, constantly evolving with the times, WWE ensures it delivers a brand new video game each and every year to help keep fans up-to-date and in touch with the product. Having a huge name on your cover is often regarded as very important when drawing the attention of gamers. They’ve had The Rock, John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin and part-timer Brock Lesnar in recent years of the WWE 2K series. But they’ve broken the predictable mould for WWE 2K18, and breaking the mould suits the chosen star perfectly… it’s ‘The Kingslayer’ Seth Rollins.

Come on, we all expected WWE to either trot out a legend like Kurt Angle to front the WWE 2K18 marketing campaign, or give the mantle to ‘the guy’ Vince McMahon wants to force upon us all, Roman Reigns. Fortunately for us, Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins got the nod and given how much he’s accomplished since the NXT days, there’s no doubt he deserves it. The biggest message it sends is that WWE and 2K are focusing on the now, promoting the amazing talent currently on show and subsequently someone the fans adore, instead of allowing a past star, or part-timer, to take the limelight.

Then we saw the debut trailer; having Seth Rollins burn everything sacred in the WWE to the ground and destroying anything in sight – Ric Flair’s robe, the Million Dollar Championship, hell even Andre the Giant’s statue wasn’t out of bounds. It could signify a real change is coming. That opens the door for new modes to be added or major revamps to those usually present, especially with the emphasis on the ‘Be Like No One’ tag line, which may refer to the career aspect of forging your own legacy. It’s certainly an area in need of change after the problems the previous title faced.

Considering the pure destruction of items associated with WWE Legends and Hall of Famers, I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest to see a major cull of these from the roster. This then makes more room for the stars of NXT to shine, the developmental division of the WWE and where the meteoric rise of Rollins began.

Given the impressive career of Seth Rollins so far, I’d love to see Showcase mode make a return and show the world how far he’s come in seven years. Recreating moments such as becoming the inaugural NXT Champion by defeating Jinder Mahal, storming onto the main roster during the triple threat match between John Cena, CM Punk and Ryback, and later winning the WWE World Heavyweight title at the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania. This also allows 2K to showcase the Shield’s finest moments, thus satisfying the fans of Reigns and Dean Ambrose at the same time. It’s a win-win situation.

Obviously this is all speculation, but we do know that with Seth Rollins leading the charge, WWE 2K18 is sure to provide us with something special. We’ll have to wait until October 17th, 2017 for it to arrive on Xbox One and PS4, but in the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for more information as we get it.
