Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute – out now on Xbox and Switch

Some games take the scenic route to an international release. Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute has taken things a step further, bringing a game that originally launched in Japan back in 1997 to Xbox And Nintendo Switch for the very first time.

The classic fusion of board game strategy and deck building is now available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, as well as Switch.

Published by Clear River Games and developed by CITY CONNECTION, Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute preserves the original game’s distinctive mix while adding a handful of modern conveniences to make returning to its world considerably easier.

A Board Game With A Deck-Building Twist

Culdcept doesn’t fit neatly into one genre. Players roll a die – sometimes two – and move around a board, claiming land by summoning creatures to defend it. The objective is to accumulate a set amount of magic before making it back to the castle, but opponents have plenty of opportunities to disrupt your plans along the way.

The board’s land is split across four colours, each representing a different terrain type and corresponding creature alignment. Claiming territory is only the beginning, too, as land can be upgraded to provide additional benefits.

It creates a game where every roll of the dice can potentially alter the balance of power.

More Than 300 Cards To Build Your Book

The other half of the Culdcept equation comes from its cards.

Each player takes a 50-card “book” into battle, with more than 300 cards available to collect and experiment with. When an opponent lands on your territory, they can either pay the required toll or attempt to defeat the creature defending it.

That’s where the card battles come into play. Creature encounters can be influenced by special item cards, allowing players to strengthen their side of a fight and potentially turn what looks like an easy conquest into a costly mistake. Building the right deck therefore becomes just as important as understanding the board itself.

A Lost Classic Gets Some Modern Conveniences

For all its retro origins, Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute isn’t simply being dropped onto Xbox untouched.

A new Rewind feature allows players to jump back in time, while Quick Save and Load can be used at any point during a game. There’s also a Bonus Pack that provides additional reward cards after matches.

The ability to reveal hands also means you can keep an eye on both your own cards and those belonging to your opponents, adding another option for those who want a little more information before committing to their next move.

A Very Different Kind Of Strategy Game

The arrival of Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute gives Xbox and Switch players the opportunity to discover a piece of Japanese gaming history that has remained out of reach for decades. Its unusual combination of board-game movement, territorial control, creature battles and deck construction remains the central attraction, while the modern additions should make the experience more welcoming for today’s audience.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a traditional board game and a collectible card game decide to share the same space, Culdcept has an answer – and it’s been waiting since 1997 to give it.

Culdcept The First Saturn Tribute is now available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S for ÂŁ24.99 from the Xbox Store. The Nintendo eShop holds a version too.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
