Mamorukun Recurse
Mamorukun Recurse! – out now

A beloved Japanese arcade classic, where you can dynamically alter the difficulty by cursing your own bullets, has been reborn and enhanced for a modern audience.

A revival of the 2008 arcade hit, Mamorukun ReCurse! is a unique vertical-scrolling shoot ‘em up from developer City Connection and publisher Clear River Games – and it is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC for £20.99.

Prepare to dive into a colourful and charming world inspired by traditional Japanese mythology, where the greater the risk, the higher the score!

An Arcade Classic, Reborn

Mamorukun ReCurse! is a revival of Mamorukun Curse!, a game that originally debuted in Japanese arcades back in mid-2008. It draws its inspiration from traditional Japanese mythology, blending it into a vibrant and family-friendly world. This new version has been enhanced with a modern widescreen format and intuitive twin-stick controls.

The most unique feature of this SHMUP is the Curse Bullets mechanic. You can use these to dynamically alter the difficulty as you play. You can wipe out smaller enemies and clear projectiles from the screen, or you can take a risk and power up larger enemies, making them harder to defeat but rewarding you with a much higher score. You can even curse yourself to increase your own damage and overcome more challenging foes.

In another unique twist, you control the scroll of the screen. The stage will only advance when you move your character forward. But be warned, the game is timed, so standing still all day is not an option!

A Complete and Enhanced Experience

This new version is absolutely packed with content, leaving players spoilt for choice with its different modes:

  • Arcade Mode: The original 2008 version of the game.
  • Story Mode: Switch between characters and aim to conquer all five worlds.
  • Netherworld Action Mode: Choose three characters and take on predetermined challenge courses.
  • On top of that, the game also includes previously released DLC characters, alternate costumes, and a full Gallery Mode.

Your Pilot’s Log

Here’s what you can expect from this unique shoot ’em up adventure:

  • A Revival of a Japanese Arcade Classic: The 2008 hit Mamorukun Curse! is back and better than ever.
  • Unique “Curse Bullets” Mechanic: Dynamically alter the difficulty by powering up enemies for a higher score, or even cursing yourself for more damage.
  • You Control the Scroll: The stage only advances when you do.
  • Packed with Content: Includes Arcade, Story, and Netherworld Action modes, plus DLC characters and more.
  • Modern Enhancements: Features a new widescreen format and twin-stick controls.

A true classic from the golden age of the Japanese arcade has been reborn. If you’re a fan of unique and charming shoot ’em ups, Mamorukun ReCurse! is ready for you on the Xbox Store right now, playable on Xbox Series X|S. And of course, other storefronts will cover the bases if you play elsewhere.

An Xbox gamer since 2002, I bought the big black box just to play Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I have since loved every second of the 360's life and am now just as obsessed with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S - mostly with the brilliant indie scene that has come to the fore.
