Are you the masochistic type who loved their time with Super Meat Boy and N+? If so, well, we have a little treat for you: Dead Dungeon is a dungeon where you’re going to die, and die repeatedly. Get your platforming thumbs out and sharpen your reflexes: you’re going to need them as Dead Dungeon is out now on Xbox One, joining previous releases on Switch and PC via Steam.
You could almost imagine switching out the skull-headed character from Dead Dungeon and replacing it with Meatboy: this really is a spiritual continuation of that fantastic game. You start with a single 2D platforming screen, your character spawns somewhere within it, and you have to hop, skip and jump over the various traps to get to the doors that signal the end.
While this might seem relatively vanilla from the trailer, remember this is a budget title, only £4.19 on launch, so consider it as a booster pack for your favourite hardcore platformers and go from there.
There’s some spice in the stew with a chiptune soundtrack from HateBite, which sounds pretty ace, actually, and easter eggs in the forms of riddles to find. It’s not clear whether some of the basic expectations from this kind of game, like highscores, are included.
