Two mammoth releases come to Game Pass today. We have Deathloop (Xbox Series X|S), which was once a PlayStation exclusive, and Hardspace Shipbreaker (Console, Cloud and PC), which has been on the PC service for a couple of months, but gets slotted into the Xbox game library today.
Deathloop is the one that has us refreshing the store to see if it’s arrived yet. Developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda, it was on many Game of the Year lists in 2021. Now that its one-year exclusivity deal with Sony has run out, we get the privilege of judging whether it sits in our Best of Year lists.
Set in the 1960s, Deathloop is a super high-concept shooter that casts you as Colt, an assassin who is stuck in a time loop with a singular mission: kill eight targets called ‘visionaries’ in the space of 24-hours. Oh, without dying himself. If Colt does die, the loop restarts. If not all of the targets die in a single day, then they will restart the loop and all of Colt’s efforts will be for naught.
As you would hope and expect from an Arkane AAA shooter, Colt is a nippy little bugger. He can use stealth, parkour, traps, guns, gadgets and umpteen more tricks and treats to take out his opponents. The game is set across a full day-night cycle, and there are four districts in which your targets reside. Your actions have implications on the behaviours of NPCs, so choosing the order in which you kill or incapacitate them is imperative.
We can’t wait to get our teeth into Deathloop and start planning the perfect day, Bill Murray-style. Expect a review soon.
We’ve already sold Hardspace Shipbreaker to you in a previous Game Pass news, when it arrived on PC. But know that it’s been getting some glowing reviews in the intervening period. This has a killer premise that immediately gets us imagining how it might play: you are LYNX, the leading service in spaceship salvage. You come across drifting hulks of metal in space, then strip them for credits and hints of what might have scuttled them. Again, expect a review from us anon.
In terms of the rest of the month, we’ve got an inkling of what’s coming, but the Xbox announcement is due and more titles might be added. We are getting Beacon Pines (Console, PC) and Slime Rancher 2 (Early Access – Console, PC) on September 22nd; Grounded (1.0 release – Console, PC, Cloud) and Moonscars (Console, PC) arrive on September 27th; and Valheim (PC) will be belatedly joining the service on September 29th.
