The Return of the Seven Heroes
The story of Romancing SaGa 2 begins in an age long past, when warriors known as the Seven Heroes fought to save mankind. But their good deeds turned to curses, and they were banished to another dimension.
Now, true to legend, the Heroes have reappeared, but their long exile has corrupted their forms, and they now seek vengeance on all who wronged them. You will take on the role of the Emperor of Avalon, defending your Empire across successive generations, expanding your realm, and ultimately defeating the vengeful Seven Heroes one by one to save the world.

A Generations-Spanning Adventure
Romancing SaGa 2 presents a unique story structure with its groundbreaking Free-Form Scenario system. Your choices will dramatically alter the course of the Emperor’s journey, from how you expand the Empire to what order you challenge the Seven Heroes.
You’ll join forces with characters from over 30 different classes and choose the next Emperor from a wide pool of candidates, each eligible to inherit the throne. The knowledge and abilities of previous rulers are passed down through the mystical art of inheritance magic, forging a lasting bond with your chosen characters.
Enhanced Combat and Modern Graphics
The strategic turn-based battle system of the original has been further enhanced to a timeline system, complete with classic SaGa mechanics like “Glimmers” (where you learn new abilities in battle) and “Formations” (which provide unique benefits to your retinue).
The remake also welcomes the new “United Attack” feature, allowing you to perform powerful combination attacks.
The 2D pixel sprites of the original are now modelled in full 3D, retaining their charming appearances based on Tomomi Kobayashi’s beautiful concept illustrations. All towns and dungeons are fully rendered with reworked terrains and layouts. The soundtrack, by original composer Kenji Ito, returns with beautiful new arrangements, and you can even toggle between the original and new versions.
You can select from three difficulty levels: Casual (story-focused), Normal (balanced for veteran RPG players), and Hard (Classic), perfect for those looking for the brutal but satisfying challenge of the original 1993 version.
A Second Chance to Get it Right
We’ve been on this journey with Romancing SaGa 2 before. In our review of the original Romancing SaGa 2 from 2018, we found a lot to love in its non-linearity, striking visuals, and enjoyable soundtrack. However, we also highlighted “glaring issues of the battle system” that “hamstrung by lacklustre and dodgy battle mechanics.”
This full remake by the team behind Trials of Mana aims to address those issues, offering reworked strategic gameplay and various other enhancements to truly delight long-time SaGa fans and newcomers alike.
