As we expect from Bungie, as the clock ticks down to Destiny 2’s release on September 6th, they will ramp up the hype with trailers and sneak peeks. We saw it with Destiny, and true to form, just ahead of Gamescom, Bungie have hit us with the official launch trailer for Destiny 2.
As I have touched on in my many ramblings about Destiny, the vanilla version of the original game had trouble telling the story and was rightly derided for it. Without a word of a lie, it appears that there is more story in the two and a half minutes of this trailer than in the whole of the first game.
Humanity has fallen, Ghaul (or Gary, he looks like a Gary to me) has captured the Traveller and its Light and is waxing lyrical about how he is the only one worthy of the power. We see Cayde, Ikora and Zavala trying to rally the surviving guardians to help the fleeing civilian population, but without the light, how can we fight the Cabal? A head on assault would surely be suicide, and with no Ghosts (we saw our Ghost fail and fall at the end of the story mission in the beta, after all), the Guardians are as mortal as the rest of Humanity.
The story in Destiny 2 looks like it is going to be a sprawling affair, and we already know we will have to travel the solar system to reunite the fractured Vanguard, and get the band back together. With a reported 55 hours of PvE activities to play through, this looks like it is going to be a game to really get our teeth into, and seems to more than address the shortfalls of the first game. Ghaul is shaping up to be a baddy we can all hate, and in the trailer his attendants are telling him about how the Guardians are fleeing or have been executed. If we get the Light back, will these dead heroes rise to kick Ghaul in his armoured arse? Only time will tell, it appears.
My appetite is well and truly whetted, and if excitement levels in my house weren’t high enough, the promise of this trailer looks set to blow the roof off. With only 15 days to go as I write this, the holiday is booked, I have bought enough Rockstar energy drink to float a battleship (there is a promotion going on that will reward you with in-game gear for entering the codes under the ring pulls) and I am preparing myself to go without sleep for as long as it takes.
How about you guys? Are you as excited as I am? Does the trailer change your mind if you didn’t fancy Destiny 2? Let us know below!
