Destiny 2 update
Destiny 2 – updates are coming

The future of the Traveler’s chosen is now looking to a galaxy far, far away for its salvation. Bungie has today revealed Destiny 2: Renegades, the next major expansion for the game, which is inspired by the legendary Star Wars galaxy.

Set to launch on December 2nd, 2025, this bold and completely unexpected new direction was announced during a livestream that also revealed Ash & Iron, the first major free update in the Year of Prophecy, which brings a host of new content to all players and is available to download today.

A Desperate Gambit for a Faltering Saga?

To say that the last chapter of Destiny 2 was a disappointment would be an understatement. The last expansion, The Edge of Fate, was a critical failure for us. In our scathing 2/5 review, we called it “A New Low for the Destiny Franchise” and the “new worst Destiny expansion” in the series’ history.

The pressure, then, is immense for Bungie to deliver something truly special to win back the trust of a deeply disappointed community. This new Star Wars-inspired Renegades expansion is a massive, high-risk, high-reward gambit that could be exactly what the game needs to reignite the spark of excitement.

Welcome to the Lawless Frontier

Destiny 2: Renegades is the next chapter in the Fate Saga. The story will see Guardians defying the Vanguard to join the Drifter and a new crew of underdogs. Your mission is to challenge a powerful Cabal faction, the Barant Imperium, whom the Drifter suspects has a connection to the mysterious Nine.

This new adventure will be based out of a new social hub, the Tharsis Outpost. Here, you will build your reputation with a variety of shady Syndicate factions through the new Notoriety system, which will allow you to expand your arsenal and influence.

The new ViDoc, “Infiltrating the Lawless Frontier,” showcased a host of new content and gameplay mechanics.

High-Risk, High-Reward Jobs

A new game mode, Lawless Frontier, will have you and your fireteam taking on high-risk contracts, including smuggling, bounty hunting, and sabotage. These missions will span three planets and six new maps, all inspired by iconic Star Wars locations. A new Invasion feature will also allow you to opt-in for additional challenges by enabling other Guardians to invade your missions.

A brand-new weapon archetype, the Blaster, is being introduced. Inspired by Star Wars, these are energy-based weapons that draw ammo directly from your reserves and feature a unique heat management system.

Ash & Iron: A Free Update for All, Live Today

While Renegades is still a few months away, a massive new free update, Ash & Iron, is available for all Destiny 2 players starting today.

For the first time since the original Destiny, you can return to the Plaguelands. A new three-player Fireteam Ops activity, Reclaim, will have you hunting for Golden Age tech and battling Vex and Cabal forces.

The Rewards Pass for The Edge of Fate has also been refreshed with 110 new ranks of rewards, including a new Strand Exotic Pulse Rifle. Looking ahead, the Epic difficulty for The Desert Perpetual raid will launch on September 27th, a new Exotic mission arrives on October 7th, and the annual Festival of the Lost event returns on October 21st.

Bungie has made its boldest move yet in the history of the Destiny franchise. By looking to the stars and embracing a completely new and unexpected source of inspiration, they have set the stage for what could be an incredible comeback story.

The journey to redeem the soul of Destiny 2 begins today.
