Ditching the wires, Train Sim World 3 goes diesel with the latest German line

train sim world 3 Niddertalbahn Bad Vilbel Stockheim

Anyone familiar with travelling the Train Sim World 3 railways will know that there has been a huge push from Dovetail Games in regards the content on offer. Today another DLC pack arrives for purchase, with this one ditching the overhead lines for some proper diesel power – are you ready to head to the Niddertalbahn: Bad Vilbel – Stockheim route?

Available right now for Train Sim World 3 players to enjoy is the Niddertalbahn: Bad Vilbel – Stockheim route add-on. This comes on the back of a recent Linke Rheinstrecke: Mainz – Koblenz route, and that of the steam power that we know and love.

This time around the Train Sim World 3: Niddertalbahn: Bad Vilbel – Stockheim route focuses on the joys of the 1990s, the diesel traction that was in place then, as well as a single-track line and multiple loops. This should be seen – at least according to Dovetail as we’ll bow down to their expertise in the matter – as something very different to the usual urban commuter routes.

Train Sim World 3: Niddertalbahn: Bad Vilbel – Stockheim is set in the 1990s and adds in the requested DB BR 628.2 to Train Sim World, complete in full white and mint livery. But it’s the rumble of its diesel power which will excite, as you head through some fourteen different stations, taking in a complete branch line, with most services operating from end to end.

Further to that are the sugar beet trains that are hauled by the BR 365 shunter, with this one working as a main line freight locomotive. Using ES50 wagons – something which is also apparently new to Train Sim World – this loco is at its best when lugging some of the last sugar beet trains to safety, all before they ceased on the line just after the start of the 1990s.

The Niddertalbahn: Bad Vilbel – Stockheim route itself is set in 1992, complete with the route, stations, signage and train services that all reflect this period, depicting a time prior to the redevelopment of a number of the route’s stations and introduction of more modern DMUs. But that does mean that unless you’re a grizzled old veteran of the lines, you may not recognise some of the names on offer here; like Heldenbergen-Windecken or even the route’s terminus at Stockheim, as they have since been renamed (to Nidderau and Glauburg-Stockheim respectively) along with others.

If you do drop in though, intrigued but this latest Train Sim World 3 addition, then expect to find that the style of operation along the Nidder Valley is unique among German Train Sim World content. Punctuality is key (of course it is!) to ensure that trains can cross in the passing loops on what is otherwise a single-track line. The services meanwhile should be seen as a mix of end-to-end passenger workings and freight trains that are held in order for them to keep to time, with some passenger services working part of the line in the evening.

And as this is Train Sim World 3, you will see a high level of detail throughout a condensed, rural branch line, with plentiful greenery and period stations, named and styled to reflect their condition in 1992.

What’s more, if you previously got involved with the last German route – Left-Rhine: Linke Rheinstrecke: Mainz-Koblenz – you’ll discover a number of additional layers across the service timetables of both routes.

Sold? The Train Sim World 3: Niddertalbahn: Bad Vilbel – Stockheim route is on the Xbox Store as we speak, priced up at a cool £29.99. That may feel expensive to many, especially as a DLC pack, but it’s a fairly common price for what is on offer in this railway sim. It’s playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S via that link, but expect to find the exact same content on PlayStation and PC too.

Don’t forget you’ll need the Train Sim World 3 base game to hand in order for this to work.
