Few franchises carry the same chaotic reputation as Carmageddon, and now Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is here to drag vehicular combat into a roguelite future.
Launching on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC for ÂŁ39.99, this modern reimagining swaps open-ended carnage for structured runs, progression systems, and a world fighting to survive the end of civilisation.
The result is a brutal blend of destruction racing, survival mechanics, and upgrade-driven combat, all set in a world where the night belongs to monsters and the road belongs to the reckless.
A World Where Racing Means Survival
Carmageddon: Rogue Shift drops players into the year 2050, where humanity clings to survival in fortified skyscrapers while the streets below are overrun by mutated creatures known as The Wasted.
Escape is possible, but that only comes through the deadly competition known as the Carmageddon.
Players begin with little more than a battered vehicle and scavenged weapons, fighting rival gangs, corrupted enforcers, and endless hordes of monsters in destruction-focused races. Every victory brings new upgrades, weapons, and opportunities to build a stronger machine for the next run.
It’s a darker, more structured take on the series’ chaotic roots, but one that still keeps metal-on-metal brutality at its core.
Roguelite Racing And Relentless Combat
Rather than a traditional campaign, Rogue Shift is built around procedurally generated runs. Each attempt sends players across branching routes filled with races, boss encounters, shops, and escalating threats.
Between runs, permanent upgrades unlock through the Black Market, ensuring progress continues even after a vehicle is reduced to scrap.
Combat is central to everything. Vehicles can be customised with weapons ranging from shotguns to railguns, alongside dozens of perks that encourage experimentation. Dynamic weather, time-of-day shifts, and enemy variety ensure no two runs feel quite the same.
It’s less about finishing first, and more about surviving long enough to matter.
The Carmageddon Spirit Reimagined
The original Carmageddon built its legacy on chaos, controversy, and destructive freedom. Rogue Shift reinterprets that formula through modern systems without losing the anarchic tone.
There’s still the crunch of metal, the satisfaction of a perfectly timed side-bash, and the thrill of boosting through swarms of enemies. But now, those moments are tied together by progression, strategy, and long-term survival.
When we reviewed the game, we said:
“Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is unapologetically a roguelite, and with that comes the usual repetition and grind. But that grind feels purposeful, layered with smart systems that reward racing, persistence, experimentation and the odd bit of skill.”
And importantly:
“Rogue Shift succeeds in modernising Carmageddon; and it does so without losing its soul.”

Carmageddon: Rogue Shift doesn’t try to recreate the past, it evolves it. By combining vehicular combat with roguelite progression and a grim sci-fi setting, it turns destruction racing into something that feels both familiar and new.
For longtime fans, it’s a return to chaos. For newcomers, it’s a surprisingly strategic combat racer set in a world that refuses to die quietly.
